World Through a Porthole by Artié Main
Artié Main writes from Tientsin China aboard a docked Navy vessel on Hai Ho river. He describes a cleaner port than Shanghai, rumors of war outside the city, a sandbagged pillbox, and a naval base feeling out of place. He notes modern buildings, prosperous locals, limited shore time, and green muddy river scenery with many children on nearby bum boats. The piece ends with a snapshot of daily life among sailors and Chinese boat communities.
