Moravia History Brought By Pastor Details Early Settlers
The Moravia Iowa community was settled in 1850 by Moravians from Salem North Carolina. Early founders included Joseph Stauber Theophilus Vierling Ephraim Conrad Amelia Reich and families. Land was bought for a church and parsonage with town lots and a graveyard. The Moravians shared a church with Baptists and Methodists as the village grew to about 200 inhabitants by 1856. The Moravian church disbanded in 1879, with the final pastor James Hamen. The piece also covers Moravian roots from Bohemia and the Unity of Brethren, noting Herrnhut and broader church history.
