The Day Gained By Traveling Around The World

A writer from the Cleveland Pigskin Dealer explains that traveling west to east around the world gains a day when crossing the international date line near the 180th meridian. The sun reaches noon earlier by four minutes per degree, equating to one hour per 15 degrees and 24 hours for 360 degrees, so a full circumnavigation yields an extra day. To align calendars, the day of return and the next day are given the same date, creating two Mondays in effect. East to west travelers lose a day and must skip one day of a week.
