Moravia held a subdued and safe Independence Day with five to six thousand attendees, though estimated at half that by organizers. The day featured accessible speeches on the Declaration of Independence, varied political perspectives, and small-town anecdotes about locals, family, and a Brahma hen egg tale.

Beth Tuttle died suddenly at home Friday evening at about 7 o clock. 19 years old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Ralph Tuttle, she had been in good health and helped at home before collapsing in her mother s arms. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 pm from Turner Funeral Home Moravia with Rev Chas L Ellis officiating. Interment at Hillcrest cemetery.
The Moravia Juniors beat Ottumwa Legion 5 to 2 in a Monday game during the July 4th celebration. Purvis pitched well for Moravia, allowing five hits. Ottumwa used three hurlers to limit Moravia to five hits. Moravia’s lineup included Farrel Purvis, Don Whitehead, Don Blackmun, Floyd Purvis, George Heliyer, George VanDorin, Charles Youngker, Ron Woodward, and Edward Ellis.
The town issues a 25 mph speed limit reminder urging residents to slow down. Mayor B. L. Hitt signs the notice, underscoring public safety.

Beginning Monday evening July 11, the Appanoose County Ministerial Association hosts a week of union evangelistic services in Moravia City Park at 8 p.m. each night with ministers from county churches as speakers. The second week moves to Wesley Chapel with a new schedule, featuring Rev. G. W. Swan and other clergy through July 22, inviting all church members to support and attend.

Moravia mourns Alvin Clayton Dowd longtime resident, 77, died July 2 at home after months of illness. A Nebraska Iowa migrant, he ran West End Grocery, joined Methodist church, and left a large family including eight children, grandchildren, and a devoted wife who died in March. Funeral at Moravia Methodist Church July 6, burial in Moravia cemetery.

Rex Firkina began work Monday as subscription solicitor for The Moravia Union and reported renewals and new subscriptions. The Moravia homecoming Fourth of July drew a large, peaceful crowd with visitors from distance. The day featured a Moravia School Band concert, a noon picnic, entertainment by a string group from Ottumwa, and speakers including Centerville attorney Charles Johnston and Democrat congressional candidate Ruth Hollingshead.
The Moravia Fall Festival and Farmers Institute holds its annual meeting at the Community Building on Thursday evening July 7 at 8 o clock. Officers will be elected the 1938 show date named and other business discussed. G B Johnson president Bert Turner secretary urges participation from all interested residents.
The Hatcher Players, a popular traveling show company, opened in Moravia on Tuesday night and will perform each night for the rest of the week. The big tent is set on the park's east side, where the Hatchers have played for several consecutive years.
A home talent production titled Old Homestead was staged Friday at Moravia School to benefit the band uniform fund. Cast members included Charles Merrill Eugene Wilcox and Roscoe Day with directress Mrs F W Blumenstock praised for the show’s success. The Moravia School Band opened and closed with music, Hillbilly numbers followed between acts two and three, and Band Auxiliary members expressed appreciation to all involved.
