A first person fragmentary diary recounts household routines ailing pets social visits and reflections on community WPA aid and local street issues. It mentions Unionville Clarence Avenue family ties and a late note about an accident and injuries with uncertain details.
Moravia United Brethren church members' summer camp at Cedar Falls last week drew 654 attendees daily and several hundred more on Sunday. The event, run by the church Board of Education, included Rev and Mire Zike and others from Moravia such as Ty J. Zike Tom Virginia Phyllis Zike Mrs S M Zike Marie Callen Faeelng Clester and Thomas Allen Robb.
Chinch bugs have worked overtime in the vicinity this week destroying several corn fields adjacent to wheat. In some areas farmers are quickly replacing the lost corn with soybeans to salvage harvests.
Iconium baseball blanked Blakesburg 12 to 4 at Blakenburg to move to 3-0 on the season. Pitcher Floyd Purvis allowed six hits in nine innings as Iconium jumped to four runs in the first and led the rest of the way. Next Sunday’s game date not set. Floyd Purvis seeks opponents, Mystic, lows.
New directories for the Moravia Telephone Company were printed last week by the Moravia Union job department and are being distributed by the company. Subscribers who do not receive their copy promptly are asked to call at the telephone office to obtain it.
Rural mail carriers of Appanoose county gathered at the Moravia Community building last Thursday for a cooperative supper and program. Hosts were carriers Bishop and Callen and their families of Moravia.
Clifton Boardman announces two Brompton school alumni will attend the reunion next Sunday July 9. Mirai Tila Simpson a former teacher from Medland South Dakota and Irvin Watson a former pupil from Portland Oregon are expected. Committees include program chairs Mrs Mabel Hawk Eva Boardman and Mrs Maude Coltrain. Arrangements by M E Boardman Herman Johnson Edward Robinson E F Boardman and Elija Robinson.
Merle Hodges, 18, rode from Ottumwa to Moravia on his bicycle in under four hours to visit grandparents Mr and Mrs C R Burke. He was joined by sisters Norma and Pattie Lou, staying at the grandparents' home during the visit.
The church announces a Monday evening supper featuring fried chicken mashed potatoes and gravy boiled beef and noodles green beans baked beans cold slaw Harvard beets cottage cheese salad cucumber and tomato salad pie cake ice tea and coffee.
Saturday program features March-Merry Minstrels March Fighting Irish and more with pieces by Mc Caughey, Guthrie, Fulton, and King. Virginia Gibbons and Virginia Zike sing. Announcement notes demand for used instruments, welcomes sellers to bring cornets trombones and other band needs. New and senior band growth discussed. Mervin Ellison and Jimmie Main join on mellophone and violin. Readiness for new players and instrument loans highlighted.
Moravia drew an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 in the afternoon and more at night for a Fourth of July celebration hailed as the largest in years. John E. Miller of Albia spoke on independence and civic rights, praising individual liberty and the duty of citizens to safeguard it.
A family from Shippenburg Penn led by Mrs Wright and her son T J Wright plus Woodrow and Jay Wright and daughter Chlog with Miss Helen Brubaker visited relatives east of town. The 926 mile journey covered 26 hours of travel with Mrs Wrights brother George Railing and family joining along.
Mr and Mrs Jay Argo Roy land Delorie Argo and Ernestine Stauber arrived here last Saturday after a pleasure trip that extended to the Pacific coast. They visited many scenic spots in Hinées and stayed with relatives enroute. The group also attended the San Francisco fair.
Rev R L Brown of Moravia Methodist church spoke in Delta on Tuesday delivering the patriotic address for the July 4th celebration program.
Word from the district notes the F. P. Hawk farm buildings have been brightened with white paint, improving the appearance of the property. The Hawk place is regarded as one of the better improved farms in the area.
A Moravia community Fourth of July event showcased the King Beat Revue with singing dancing and acrobatics at the Community building. John Jones aged 103 attended with his grandson Ralph Davia as locals praised the two stage shows and large seating setup. Concessions thrived despite heat and humidity while many noted the celebration’s cleanliness and absence of firecracker hazards.

The Boone Family radio artists on WHO weekday mornings brought a capacity crowd to the United Brethren church in Moravia last Friday. Several hundred more heard the concert via amplifiers outside, with visitors from many nearby communities and several Missouri cars in the group. Religious songs and music by the Boones were enjoyed by all attendees.
The Seymour WPA project planned for June 29 will grade and ditch 10.3 miles of streets and alleys, replace every culvert, and install 894 feet of corrugated metal pipes. About 15 workers will start, with $12,000 in federal labor and materials. Mayor Voyce invites public suggestions and aims to avoid later criticism.
The July 12 U B dinner menu lists fried chicken, potatoes, beans, macaroni, slaw, pickles, bread, jelly, coffee, butter, pie, and tea. The Hatchers performed twice to full houses and will stay through the week. Mr and Mrs Rowles and Cyrus Hall attended with their son in law, celebrating 68 years since their fourth in a lumber wagon trip.
Moravia launches a community playground project with 72 youths registered in three days and an average attendance of 51. The program is optional and may be partial. Indoor and outdoor activities include tennis volleyball croquet ping-pong and dancing. Director Misa Sherrard seeks donated equipment especially swings and other playground items to expand the program.
Mrs A M Smithr of Libertyville town buys J F Albert residence in Mountains. Occupancy plans not yet determined.
The seventh Brompton alumni reunion will occur at the Brompton schoolhouse on Sunday July 9. Former pupils, teachers and friends are invited. Lula R. Tillmont, Seey. VAN DORIN Reunion Slated for July 16 in Albia City Park. Relatives invited.
Peggy Hopkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Hopkins, was cut above the knee Sunday morning when a nail protruding from a barn door snagged her while she ran from the barn. A four inch gash required a physician’s care.
A historical dinner listing shows M. E. Friday offering a menu featuring roast beet brown gravy with new potatoes green beans apple sauce cottage cheese cabbage salad bread butter jelly cherry cobbler and beverages including iced tea and coffee.
