Fattening Hogs Do Not Need Slop, Tests Find
Tests at the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station show fattening hogs on full feed gain efficiently without slop unless using buttermilk or skim milk. Higher daily grain intake sometimes occurred, but feed per unit of gain stayed similar. Slop offers no advantage for brood sows. For ground oats there is no benefit to wet feed. Hogs should be fed twice daily when hand fed and waste kept to a minimum, especially in wet weather.

Inoculation and soil quality boost legume yields
The guide notes inoculated seeds should be used and soil kept sweet with lots of organic matter. A fine firm seedbed is favored. Low available phosphorus in Indiana soils makes phosphate fertilizers beneficial for legumes. Apply 100 to 150 pounds per acre of 100 percent superphosphate. When used with small grain crops, legume inoculation improves yield and quality.
