Look To Farm Woodlot To Get Needed Lumber

Farmers face lumber shortages in spring as commercial supplies fall short. E W Fobes, assistant area forester for the Iowa Timber Production War Project, urges using mature wood from farm woodlots for repairs and new structures. Logs under 12 inches can become posts or fuel. sound logs free of nails should be sawn. Farmers in southeastern Iowa pool logs to attract mills, easing handling and hauling. After sawing, lumber should be stacked to prevent warping with a foundation and air gaps. Ground under the pile remains unspecified.
