The account notes that by mid seventeenth century European influence had defined spheres across the Americas with Latin peoples dominating the south and lower north, while English Dutch Swedish and French settlements spread along coasts and inland. It references Brittany fishers and the 1524 French expedition under Francis I to verify early exploration and Verrazano’s voyage, noting the lost original letter with surviving Italian copies.

Old Native Origins for Doughboys and Dudes Word Histories
The University of Chicago press reveals in its American English dictionary that words like doughboys dubs and dudes are native American in origin. Doughboy comes from Civil War buttoned uniforms circa 1867 with first written use noted in Custer’s Tent on the Plains. Dubs first appeared in 1887 to describe awkward prizefighters. dude’s origin remains obscure but used by 1883. The work, edited by Sir William Craigie and James R. Hulbert, aims to catalog only American-origin slang words.

Iceland Split Clues Weaken Continent Drift Theory
Cracks running northeast to southeast across Iceland suggest the island may be splitting. A line of volcanoes near these fissures could erupt lava fields larger than any similar region. Scientists will measure peak distances to see if the sides are moving apart, testing Wegener’s continental drift theory.
