Mr and Mrs John Veach opened their home to co members of the Progressive club and their husbands for a Friday evening pre New Years party. Rooms were decorated with holly wreaths and a large Christmas tree. Bridge provided the main entertainment with Mrs Theo Miller and Yon Tracy winning high score prizes. Refreshments included pie sandwiches and coffee.
Mr and Mrs J L Smithburg left Monday for Chicago for an indefinite visit with their children. Mrs Smithburg plans to seek treatments while there.
Miss Reba Mahree Callen became the bride of John H. Packard in a New Year wedding at the Little Brown Church in Nashua Iowa. The ceremony featured a 4ingla ring rite with Rev. William Kent officiating. The couple, attended by Miss Glee Gallen and Howard Norris, celebrated as church bells rang for future happiness. The bride wore dubonnet crepe with matching trim and sweet pea corsage. her sister wore black crepe with gold accents. Miss Callen, Moravia High graduate and former Bartlett teacher, and Mr. Packard of Centerville, now with Nash Motor Co in Kenosha, plan to live at 2517 Seventy-sixth Street Kenosha Wisconsin.
Fred Blumenstock was elected president of Class 9 at the Methodist Sunday School. Officers include J. L. Dodd vice president, Mrs. Stella Carter secretary, William Gardner treasurer, Harry Glick teacher, Rev. A. M. Smith assistant teacher. Committees named, carols sung, Bible gift presented.
Moravia high school band auxiliary will meet in the school music room at 3 o clock Friday afternoon. Attendance is requested. Mrs. Freeman Jolly serves as secretary.
Deena McDonough celebrated her 10th birthday Sunday with a beautifully decorated cake. Barbara Jo Ellen Brosher and Bernice Underwood assisted with the candles as dinner guests.
Moravia residents await the new Moravia Telephone Co. board arriving from New York City, shipped December 28. Stromberg Carlson installers from the manufacturer are on site this week to set up the equipment and connect thousands of wires, with about three days projected for the hookup barring delays.
Deloris Main and Juanita Smith hosted members of the Swastika Sunday School class at the United Brethren church at the Main home Thursday evening. Court whist was played with Francis Miller taking first prize. Guests included Allegra Land, Paul Smith of Naples S D, and Wendell Murdy of Albia.
A miscellaneous shower for Mrs Ronald Woodward formerly Doris Jean Luse was hosted Thursday by Mrs Wilbur Harris and others. Attending guests from church groups in Torrington included Ella Jean Woodward Varna Jean Baumgardner and Mrs Cody Luse. Twenty five guests attended the event at the Harris home.

The Rev T J Zike of the United Brethren church has influenza for a week. His wife the Rev Vera Zike preached in the pulpit Sunday morning and spoke at a watchnight service in Unionville with pastors from Salem Unionville and Udell Baptist churches also taking part.
The T. R. Gordner home hosted a pleasant holiday week with Emma Owen of Mt. Pleasant and Mr. and Mrs. Lorence Gordner of Burt Iowa in attendance. Erma Brooke of Perry spent Sunday. Guests included Donald Darby, Mrs. Ives, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Owen and son Bill of Mt. Pleasant, and Etta Lundson of New London for New Years Day.
Rev Vera Zike officiated at the funeral of Mrs. George Zook, a former parishioner at Cambridge, Saturday. She was accompanied by her son Tom.
D Bishop and Mrs Ora Selby were installed Monday at the Masonic hall in joint ceremonies of Antiquity lodge No 262 A F and A M and Moravia chapter D E O R, with Charles B Hayes and G H Harlan assisting. Officers named include L Hopkins Emil Halden Dille Minnes Kinion and others, plus several Eastern Star appointments. Selby received red roses from her niece Dorothy Nowels as the ceremony ended.
Iowa State College extension economists foresee lower average hog and cattle prices over the next six months due to heavier marketings, with lambs likely to rise near season end. They note 1989 hog crop was record, spring pig saves at 52 million and fall 32 million. If foreign demand grows, declines may be less. Cattle feeding is high. weather may influence breeding stock holding, with more lambs fed western states and a potential early spring price rise after a winter market peak.
