Karl Tuttle reports his son Kenneth stationed in Japan expects a U S return soon and discharge is planned. Kenny says he would not stay in Japan for $1,000 a month. Also lists new week order subscriptions paid for by several local residents.
Attendance at Sunday School and Church was 47 with a four person Laymen's program. Several Gladfelder family members and friends gathered for visits, parties, and farm bureau meetings, with multiple trips to nearby homes and occasional assistance and moving help noted. Continuous references to Gladfelder households mark the day’s local social activity.
A community notes several visits and gatherings with family from Wyoming Des Moines and California. Mrs Johnson and her family visited Joe Martin's home while Mio Foster joined a Sunday dinner for Walter le Wilson in Centerville. Local residents attended a Farm Bureau meeting at the California schoolhouse and others welcomed new neighbors the Callens and their baby.
Mrs Ernest Hiatt Coulson and family hosted and attended multiple social events in Albia and nearby communities. Notes mention visits by Mary Miller of Albia, a farewell for Mr and Mrs R E Luse, gatherings with Theo Miller Edyth Coulson Bert Luses and others, and movements of Robert Luses to Centerville. Theo Miller noted in Ames and several Hiatt and Whicker family activities occurred at Hiattsville and related homes.
The district welcomes Karen Woodward, new primer student from Scott school, while three pupils depart for Rockford city schools. Eighth grader Bob Carter studies Civics and land drawings, and the class books 309 volumes in their library with donations from Beverly Fischer. Members note Valentine event, mascots, and a Collie dog with eight puppies visiting daily.
Our Junior Audubon club was organized February 11 making us members of the National Audubon Society. Mrs Tillmont is our sponsor and the motto Explore out of doors see for yourself guides us. Bob Carter is president Ann Pettibone vice president Karleen Fischer secretary.
The text records student notes about a bird club formed with 10c per pupil dues from a school fund. Members held a meeting, drew birds, colored pictures, and received color sets with pamphlets. Each member got a membership badge and a scratch book, with materials bought from the school funds.
Freshman class party in Albia attended by Bill Moore and friends. Families visiting and hosting at several homes including Hammond Massman and Fenton households. Clover Leaf Club met February 20 with sewing Rug rugs and quilt blocks. Dinner and games followed with many local residents present. Next meeting set for March 5 with Vera Moore.
A woman visited Sunday afternoon with her grandmother Mrs Priscilla Mehrhoff at Cincinnati. John McAnineh and John Wm McAnineh left Sunday with Gilbert Scheurman of Mt. Pleasant for a trip to Texas, expected to last several days.
The Urbana Commandos met with Bruce and Irvin Faber for a planned but snow-canceled coast ing party at the W A Wilson home. The Wednesday club met February 20 at Mrs C R Sandifer s home with two new members Mrs Versal Barnes and Mrs J B Robinson. Next meeting is March 5 at Mrs Rushing s. Harold Miller has measles. twins and Lester are recovering. Nadine returned to Rock club. Uncle Jimmy Wilson is ill. Residents visited by Mr and Mrs Ernest Horn. Doris Parker spent the weekend at Henry Horn s. Velma Bokholt visited Mrs Sandifer s home and James Williams home while Jim and Maye attended Rook club.
The Tuesday club met at Mrs A B Stanley’s home with seven members and two guests. Shirley Underwood recuperates after a sledding accident in Centerville and receives many well wishes. Ottumwa visitor Dell Wilson Glenn Ogden enlists in the Navy after six years service. Essie Whisler’s Utopian club held a Times current affairs contest with high score 103. Mr and Mrs Don Blumer welcome baby daughter Betty Anne born February 18. A schoolhouse mass meeting discussed consolidation. Union mourns Russell Selix’s death in Ottumwa due to heart trouble. funeral in Ottumwa and burial at Memorial Lawn.
