Seed shortage may push alfalfa clover purchases in Iowa
Iowa State College economists warn fast seed sales for red clover and alfalfa as scarce supply meets high prices. Despite about 25 per bushel, farmers rush to buy good quality seed, with 780,000 bushels red clover and 380,000 bushels alfalfa produced nationally last year. Some farmers switch to timothy or sweet clover for spring seeding.

Prices and supply shift in clover and timothy seed markets
Economists note mixed signals for legume seed prices as feedback from 1987 acreage and yields along with the new AAA program shapes demand. Timothy seed remains plentiful at 2.35 million bushels last year versus a five year avg. For sweet clover, 955000 bushels were produced in 1987, and alfalfa and red clover saw higher costs. Dealers may delay purchases until spring to seek lower prices if supplies rise. conversely, new demand from the conservation program could push prices up.
