Australian beef and sheep industry highlights from Canberra to Melbourne
Australian agriculture notes record meat exports with 268000 tons frozen beef and 318000 tons shipped to the United States. Japan and England purchase thousands of tons annually while U.S. beef is mostly frozen garden variety used in sausages and TV dinners. Shorthorn Angus and Hereford cattle dominate, rabbits still threaten grazing lands, and large sheep cooperatives reach nearly a million head. The author visits reserves in Melbourne, complains of a fast pace, and recalls a three-briefing day at Canberra’s Federal Agriculture Department.
