Cattle Prices Seen Staying Strong For Feeders
Iowa State University extension economist Gene Futrell says fed cattle prices rose to about 29 to 30 dollars per hundredweight by late January and are likely to stay near that level through winter. With 12.2 million head on feed as of Jan 1, herd placements declined, especially heifers, while steer and steer calves rose slightly. He notes demand may drop with high pork supplies and unemployment, but overall prices should firm around late January levels, though some weakness is expected in spring.
