George Hiatt of Oukaloosa, Ia, visited Morevia on Tuesday as a curious daily tax spree tale unfolds. John D. Citizen endures a day of taxes from sunrise to nightfall, including state and federal levies on meals, fuel, goods, services, and even a supposed mortgage on a mare. The piece plays as a satirical mock ledger of tax burden.
Moravia Community club schedules its annual meeting Friday evening February 8 at 7 30 in the Community Building. Officers urge a large attendance as the agenda includes the election of six directors.
P J Durnan, income tax field man for four counties, holds a meeting at the Moravia school house tonight to explain state income tax filing. Attendance urged for those with net incomes of 600 or more, or 1100 for families, and all partnerships must file. Durnan will assist with return blanks and is based at the Continental hotel in Center ville.
Rebekah Lodge members were installed Monday evening at the Odd Fellow hall. Mrs. Mildred Bishop and Mrs. Eva Firkins led the ceremony with efficient service. officers named include Edith Turner, Mazine Roberts, Jennie Johnson, Effie Gollaher, Gladsie Pennington, Eva Firkins, Stoops, Johnagn, Clara Selby, Ruby Bivin, Mary Ward, Mary Firkins, Areminta Haddock, and Chap. A refreshments hour followed the event.
Mystic Cincinnati and Moravia high schools plan a round robin boys and girls tournament to decide class A championships in Appamoose county. Moulton and Centerville, the other class A schools, did not all participate in planning. Schedule sets Moravia at Mystic Monday Feb 11. Mystic at Cincinnati Wednesday Feb 18. Cincinnati at Moravia Friday Feb 15. Season tickets do not cover tournament games. admission and times to be announced next week. Grant Everman attended Centerville for B J Funkhouser funeral Monday afternoon.
John Gilmore Wilson born August 16 1863 near Moravia Iowa died January 31 1935 at the Des Moines home of his daughter aged 72 years 5 months 15 days He lived in Woodburn and Moravia and served as county treasurer in Monroe and Clarke counties He leaves six children 12 grandchildren two brothers and two sisters among a wide circle of relatives and friends
Miss Marjory Cameron arrived from Kirksville Missouri to spend the weekend with her parents. The menu features Swiss steak in brown gravy with potatoes green beans cold slaw pickles jelly hot biscuits and coffee.
The paper reports the weekly feature failed to arrive from the State Capitol and regrets the gap. The Union hopes the service will not be interrupted again and resumes normal publication soon.

Mrs. W. P. Davia reported the death of her uncle D. W. Eads in Pratt Kansas on Saturday morning. He was past eighty and had been ill for some time. Burial occurred at Coates Kansas. He formerly lived in the area and was known to many older residents. An obituary is expected later.

Moravia town council voted Monday night to cancel the 1935 poll tax assessment. The state old age pension law allows a $2 deduction from the poll tax, leaving too small an amount to justify hiring a collector. The old age pension tax remains payable, but no Moravia poll tax will be assessed for 1935.
Obituary notes Joe Hiatt of Akeley Minnesota died January 25 after years of illness. Funeral near Akeley January 28. He leaves wife and six children from Iowa and Kansas ties, plus four grandchildren. Hiatt spent years in Moravia and Ottumwa areas and reconsecrated his life to his savior in recent months. Birth details and hospital stays noted. a daughter Mary Lou was born to Mr. and Mrs. R A Gaekle of Winterset Iowa.
R J Funkhouser died from a fractured skull after a three-car collision on highway 60 four and a half miles south of Moravia. The crash Friday morning also injured his wife Ella, their daughter-in-law and son-in-law, and a nephew. Funeral services were held Monday at the United Brethren church with burial in Moravia cemetery.
Moravia High School girls basketball team, coached by Supt. Wm. H. Young, edged Mystic 18 to 16 on the local floor Tuesday night. It marked Moravia’s first win over Mystic since long before, with Moravia gaining the lead after the second quarter and holding on despite uneven play.
Everett Morris Moravia High guard set a local record by scoring a first long basket in nine straight games. The string ended when a tenth try against Seymour last Friday narrowly failed. He then sank a first long shot against Mystic Tuesday night.
Moravia boys defeated Seymour 31 to 28 while the Moravia girls surged in the second half to overcome Seymour, despite a tough start. Burton fouled out early for Moravia as the boys battled back from early deficits. Pyner led Mystic in the boys game with sharp shooting and a late rally.
Moravia Public School Band and high school glee club will give a benefit concert next Tuesday night February 12 to raise funds for music contest expenses in spring. Director M. H. Betterly leads the band and Miss Marjorie Frey directs the glee club. Admission is 5 and 10 cents with a hope for strong turnout and solid support.
In a close finish the Masons secured the win as Easter hit a long range field goal and Morning Charity added a decisive shot, delivering the margin of victory in a 28-28 tie before the final buzzer.
