Narrow Escape For Local Youths In Coasting Accident Saturday

About a dozen youngsters narrowly escaped injury while sledding south of town near Elm Hollow road Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Paul Cridlebaugh driving a car tried to brake on the snowpacked road and struck the rear wheel of a tractor carrying riders, breaking the tractor in two. Ronnie Woodward was taken to Albia hospital for x rays with bruised muscles. three sleds were destroyed. Cridlebaugh’s car stopped at a snow bank before dropping to a steep embankment. three Cridlebaugh children were shaken but unharmed aside from minor injuries to Collin and Jim. Boy Scouts observe Scout Week Feb 7 to Feb 13 with a Feb 9 church service. A parents night is planned for Feb 20.

Moravia Boys Draw Moulton in Tourney at Moulton

Moravia boys basketball was set to meet Moulton at Moulton in the conference tournament. Moulton beat Troy 68 to 55 in the opening round Wednesday night. Moravia was to play the second game after that win.

Local social notes from Des Moines visit and bridge party

Frances Ann Kaster of Des Moines is visiting two weeks with her parents Mr and Mrs Orel Kaster. Progressive club met at Mrs Gerald Morgan's home Friday. Prizes in bridge went to Mrs Lester Brain Mrs George Winsler and Mrs Karl Tuttle. Refreshments of ice box dessert and coffee served. Mrs Rowena McFatridge fell ill Wednesday at work at the bank and was taken home.

McCloud Infant Taken to Blank Memorial Hospital

Gary Francis McCloud born January 28 at Monroe county hospital Albia was taken to Blank Memorial hospital Des Moines for medical treatment and is reported improving. Mrs. McCloud was brought home from the hospital Saturday.

Garden Club Meets at Mrs Fox Home Moravia

Moravia Garden club met January 29 at Janet Fox’s home with sixteen members and a guest. Eleanor Miller was installed as new club president. New 1958 program books were given, and Victrene Mihalovich was named chair of the Home Grounds Improvement Project. The club aims to keep blue ribbon status, with plans for the Des Moines State Flower shower Feb 22 to March 2.

Past Matrons Meet at Home of Mrs Winsler

The Past Matrons club met Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. George Winsler with Mrs. Trenton Wilson assisting. After a social hour, refreshments of fruit bavarian nuts crackers and coffee were served. Dinner guests included Mr. and Mrs Bud Sells of Cheyenne Wy Mr and Mrs Claire Robinson and Ruthie of Ottumwa. Averil Kaster’s triplet calves stun farm on cold night

The Kasters' milking Shorthorn calved Sunday night in the coldest weather yet. A first heifer calf appeared, followed by a second identical heifer and a third heifer, all healthy. Mrs. Kaster aided as the cow delivered the trio.

At a Moravia volunteer fire department meeting Max McDonough was named fire chief for the coming year. Officers elected included John Spencer as assistant chief Richard Veach as drill master Jake Day as secretary and treasurer Junior Spencer as chairman Larry Brooks and Sylvan Van Dorin on the executive committee.

Wendell McDanel of Centerville was cut by a saw at the local box factory on Friday. He received treatment for wounds to his arm and elbow at a hospital and was released the same day.

Kenneth O'Conner Hurt In Grocery Store Accident

Kenneth O Conner received a knife cut in the meat department where a cutting knife was knocked from a block striking his right leg. A doctor required five stitches to close the wound, and he returned to work afterward.

Mrs Platt Arm Broken In Home Accident

Mrs Ella Platt aged 89 fell at home while emptying ashes last week. She was taken to Monroe County Hospital on Friday where doctors found both bones in her arm broken. A cast was applied and she was released.
