Moravia business firms plan to move clocks ahead one hour on February 9 to align with daylight saving time as part of the national war effort. A local representatives’ meeting at the Union office endorsed cooperation, with businesses to open at usual hours but one hour earlier and keep evening closing at 6. Roosevelt directed daylight saving time begin February 9, effective Monday.
Forest Main, Doyle Hampton and Wilbur Miller consigned Hereford cattle to a show and sale at the Iowa State Fair grounds in Des Moines. The Iowa Hereford association sponsored the event. The showing was Monday with the sale held Tuesday, and about 267 head brought an estimated total of $50,000.
Gaylord found a small box in a farm pasture near Moravia that attached to a weather balloon. The device allegedly broadcast temperature and moisture while airborne and parachuted down after the balloon burned. He mailed it to the U S Weather Bureau in Omaha and expects a $1 reward.

Irene Banke of Cincinnati and a series of relations and guests are listed for a church ceremony in Arlington Virginia with a reception at the Wilson home. Mrs. C. M. McFatridge reports 77.26 raised for the Red Cross War Fund in Moravia last week with help from Mesdames Von Tracy, Wm. Young, Chester Broshar, Paul Brashar, Catie Whicker, Curtis Burton, N. R. Ward, John Dilla, Gerald Morgan, and Freeman Jolly. A long list of donors follows including Gail Sherrard, Osa Cory, K. C. Kilnevet, Martha Brasher, D. M. McDonald, Ava Simpson, and many others, reflecting a broad community canvass.
The Ppanoose County Ministerial Association will hold its next regular meeting at 10 a.m. Monday February 9 in the Nazarene church at Centerville. The lay members are also invited to attend this gathering.
Several more youths from Moravia and vicinity have been called by the Selective Service board for their preliminary examination, indicating they may be called to service in the near future. The full list of those called has not been released.
Band Auxiliary will meet in the music room of the school building on Friday afternoon at 2 30.

Morse Moravia obituary notes Cora Rosette Smith born November 18 1874 on a Monroe county farm. She died January 30 1942 at age 68 years 2 months 12 days after long illness. Survived by four brothers Charles Orville Lester Francis and other relatives. Funeral services February 2 at Turner Funeral Home Moravia conducted by Rev. E L Pullman. Burial in Moravia cemetery.

Mrs Daisy Bradley 69 of Centerville died at St Joseph hospital at 10 30 Sunday night after months of ill health. Born in Marshalltown Mo she came to Mystic 86 years ago and lived here four years. Survived by husband Walter two daughters Roma Bradley of Chicago and Lorene Halden of Moravia and stepchildren Irwin Seddon Elsie Bradley and Edward Bradley plus two sisters and a brother. Funeral held at Mystic Methodist church with Rev Gonzales and burial in Mt Moriah cemetery near Bloomfield.
Lovilia high school teams swept Moravia on Tuesday night. The Lovilia girls led early and held on for a 35 to 5 win while the Lovilia boys overwhelmed Moravia 96 to 21 as Moravia prepared for the county tournament against Moulton in Cincinnati Wednesday night.
A roof fire at about 8 30 Monday morning threatened the Whicker Cafe but was extinguished before major damage. Sparks from the chimney were credited with starting the blaze.
The Moravia Methodist church W.S.C.S. group met with Mrs. Von Tracy on Wednesday afternoon with 32 members present. Mrs. C. M. MacFatridge led the business meeting and devotions, with Mrs. Wm. Gardner as programs leader.
The Methodist Church hosts a Jitney supper Friday February 6 from 5 to 7 p m. Menu features meat balls breaded tenderloin escalloped potatoes baked beans creamed peas salad bread butter fruit salad cookies pie and coffee.
Entertainers Mr and Mrs Lloyd Brown and Mr and Mrs Harold Mason hosted the Home Builders class of U B Sunday School at the Brown home Monday evening. Honors in games went to Mrs Claude Hawk. Sylvan VanDorin son of Mr and Mrs W H VanDorin of Kinser Valley northeast of Moravia enlisted in the Coast Guard in Des Moines on Saturday. He returned home the same day and expects to be called to active duty soon. A Moravia high school graduate, he had worked for Success Order and Beauty Supply recently.
Mr and Mrs M K Blackman entertained Kensington club members and husbands with a dessert rook at their home on Thursday. Invited guests included Mr and Mrs Steve Brown and Kenneth Daniels.
