Eddyville Faces Move to 1500 Student District Rule

Eddyville and Moravia residents rally against a state plan to eliminate districts under 1500 pupils. The Eddyville Independent district recalls 1957 and 1950s reorganizations, warns rural communities lose balance, cites Des Moines Register support for elimination, and urges citizen action while promoting local improvements and a community survey.

Moravia Garden Club Opens Season With Plans For Shows

The 1965 Moravia Garden Club held its first meeting at Mrs. Warren DuVall’s home with 14 members. President Art Fox led devotionals as plans were made for a flower show April 21 22 23 with lectures by Prof. Ed Cott Iowa State University and arrangements by Mrs. Jensvoldt and Mrs. Nolte. A plant sale headed by Mrs. Gary Charity May 1 and a June 4 show plan were announced. New yearbooks were distributed and Miss Blanche Graham spoke on forcing bids.

Moravia F F A chapter will host the sub district F F A contest on February 10 inviting chapters from the Moravia vicinity to compete in Creed speaking parliamentary procedure public speaking extemporaneous speaking and welding winners advance to district. The event demands preparation and hard work from participants.

Benz Elected Vice Chairman At Land Bank Board Meeting

The Federal Land Bank Association held its annual meeting Tuesday at Bloomfield Methodist church with 220 attendees. Clifford Moore and Leo Glentzer of Wapello county and Duane Wilson of Monroe county were elected directors for three year terms. Appanoose county had no election. Lee Foster of Bloomfield became board chairman, Lee Benz named vice chairman. The association reported 34 new loans last year, bringing total loan endorsements to 3 509 600 dollars.

Past Matrons Meet at Mrs A D Kincade Residence

The Past Matrons club met at Mrs. A. D. Kincade's home with Mrs. Trenton Wilson as assisting hostess. After a social hour, yearbooks were distributed, and refreshments of cherry dessert, nuts, candy and coffee were served. Several local residents traveled for hospital treatment and a wedding service was held at the Lutheran church in Centerville.

Moravia Methodist Sanctuary Remodeling Progress

Work continues this week on remodeling the Moravia Methodist church sanctuary. Crews paneled the worship center in light oak, installed sliding doors to close classrooms on either side, squared the altar front, and laid new altar carpet.

Reverend Coleman Speaks at County Church Meeting

Rev Elton Coleman of Moravia addressed the Appanoose County Council of Churches annual gathering at the Centerville Presbyterian church on January 28. He spoke on building bridges for race projects and loving one another as the solution to racial tensions, urging self examination and communal cooperation for witness beyond the county.

Cooks Training Program Planned in Ottumwa

Iowa State Employment Service announces a statewide 20 week cooks training program under the Manpower Training Development Act starting February 22 in Ottumwa. Forrest Hiatt Retires From Maytag Plant 1

Forrest Hiatt a Moravia Iowa native retires from Maytag Plant 1 assembly under the pension plan after nearly 14 years of service, having joined Maytag in 1945. He previously worked at Mid-Continental Petroleum Co in Newton. He is married to Gail Maine of Moravia and they have three daughters.

Frank Woodward Breaks Arm in Farm Accident

Frank Woodward sustained a broken arm when he attempted to start a tractor on Saturday at his Moravia area farm northwest of Moravia. He was hospitalized in Albia, had the arm set on Monday, and returned home on Wednesday. Woodward serves as a Moravia Community school bus driver.

Carpentry Sessions For Adult Farmers Continue

Adult farmers are invited to ongoing carpentry sessions at 7 30 p m on Feb 4 and 1 30 p m on Feb 9. Sessions welcome new projects such as hay bunks sheep feeders a picnic table and hay racks. Refreshments provided and attendees say sessions are worthwhile.

The Clover Leaf club held its January meeting at Mr. and Mrs. DeWayne Moore’s home with a co op dinner. Margaret Tarbell won a prize, and members contributed handwork. Next meeting with Helen McAninch is February 17. A hospital bandage drive was urged with old sheets and white material. The group also hosted a Cove supper and social at the schoolhouse on January 27.

Moravia Girls Fall 63 60 At Seymour In Slim Loss

Moravia’s girls trailed all game and fell 63 to 60 at Seymour as Diane Judge led with 23 points, Rose Blumer 22, Betty Blumer 15, while Lord 29 and Vruble 26 paced Seymour. Moravia boys won 61-51 behind Rick Rhee 25 and Larry Woodward 17 in a see saw finish.

Obituary notice for Della Myers in Moravia area

Della Myers age 78 died January 28 1965 at home in Moravia after months of leukemia. Born May 9 1886 in Appanoose county daughter of Charles and Emily Housley she married Charles Myers in 1906 and had three children two sons died earlier leaving Alva of Osceola and one daughter. Survived by four grandchildren four great grandchildren two sisters and a brother. Buried in Moravia Cemetery after funeral January 30 at Turner Funeral Home with Rev Elton Coleman officiating. Roy DuVall of Cheyenne Wyoming visited after the death of his sister in law Mamie DuVall.

Miss Margaret Peterson of Denver, Colorado, returned home Sunday after traveling to be with her mother’s death. She was called here last week due to the passing of Mrs. William Peterson.
