A break in at Dewey's Place occurred Sunday night. A bread truck driver found the south side cafe door broken and the interior rifled Monday morning. About 10 cartons of cigarettes stolen, roughly $3 in pennies taken, and loose coins. Cabinets, files, and drawers were emptied. Similar breaks occurred in Plano and Albia.
Moravia Garden club opened its new year at Mrs. Ira Boyer’s home with 20 members attending. Roll call, corrections to officers, audit report, and a $10 donation to the National Council of State Garden clubs were approved. Plans for a district flower show in June were announced with Mrs. Ira Boyer as general chair.
Mrs John Kinion, who sustained a broken hip on December 31, was moved from Ottumwa hospital to Kirk nursing home in Agency on January 15, where she is recuperating well.
Mrs Max Martin entered St Josephs hospital in Centerville Thursday evening and underwent major surgery Friday. She is recuperating nicely.
Fred Buckmaster is seriously ill at his Moravia residence. Mrs Garnet McDonough and Mrs Raymond Ashby assist in his care.
A daughter named Eileen Gay was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mc Donough on Saturday evening January 20. Grandparents are Mrs. Garnet McDonough and Mrs. Irene Bowers. She has three brothers and a sister to welcome her.
John W. Burton of Moravia is tentatively listed to receive a Master of Business Administration at Indiana University's mid year commencement on Sunday February 7 in Bloomington. About 500 graduates are on the tentative list, though totals may drop due to incomplete requirements or a decision to attend the June commencement.
Moravia FFA entered Rex Overturff Jerry Brown Joe Tadlock and Jim Archer in the state judging contest held January 30 at the FFA sale pavilion in Iowa Falls. The Moravia team finished 16th among 47 teams with a score of 434. Atlantic won with 494 and the top gift sold for 520 dollars.
Nazarene youths fellowship gathered Friday evening at the home of Mr and Mrs William Woodward with 30 in attendance. Paul Woodward conducted the business meeting while Mrs Frank Woodward led prayer and Rev Ray Cox gave the benediction. The group spent time visiting and playing pong, with refreshments served by the mother to close a happy evening.
Mr and Mrs Zell Callen Mr and Mrs Fred Hammond and Mr and Mrs Lester Smith co hosted a Thursday evening at the Callen home at 8 club party for E T C club members and their husbands Four tables of rock resulted with Mrs Leonard Palmer winning high score among women and John Johnson top scorer among men Refreshments followed the games and social hour.
Mr and Mrs Lew Hiner of Oskdale were summoned Sunday night by the illness of her father J P Foster. His condition is serious and all his children have been at the Foster home this week.

Max Hiner was selected Moravia fire chief on Tuesday evening with Friz Walter as assistant chief. Other officers elected include John Spencer as secretary Sylvan Van Dorin Lowell McElderry Bert Turner on the executive committee Art Fox as drill master and Richard Veach and Glen Stephenson as entertainment organizers.
A large crowd attended the Evangelical United Brethren church annual ground hog supper held Tuesday evening in the church dining room. Veas Hiatt served as general chairman and reported 125 persons were served. Mrs L B Foster of Louilia will be guest speaker at the church at 10 50 am Sunday for World Service Day observance. Special music planned. Mrs Zell Cahen and Mrs Harold Mason in charge. Foster is wife of the Louilia E U B pastor. Topic on missions.
Freeman Jolly was operated on Wednesday at St Josephs Hospital in Centerville and is recovering satisfactorily.
Taylor Township Farm Bureau sets Feb 8 at 7 30 pm at New Hope schoolhouse with Supt Raymond Fenton addressing the outlook in education. Taylor Aid plans Feb 10 meeting with Mrs Theo Miller.
Grace Methodist Church announces Sunday classes for all ages and a sermon series on What Methodists Believe with a focus on the Humanity of Christ at 6:30 pm. An evangelistic meeting at 1:30 pm will precede a board meeting on Wednesday Feb 10 at 4:00 pm. Junior Missionaries and Intermediate groups meet at specified locations. A prayer meeting at 7:30 pm Wednesday reinforces the church’s emphasis on spiritual growth.
Rev W F T Evans ministered at First Christian Church with Mrs Birdie Main as Superintendent. Sunday School began at 10 a m and communion service at 11 a m with special emphasis on temperance. Mrs Maude Coltrain was chosen secretary for the local Iowa Temperance League Inc group.
The Moravia Chapter of the Eastern Stars will hold a school of instruction on February 11 at the Masonic hall with Marie Bond as instructor. Afternoon session at 1:00, evening session at 8:00. A supper will be served by E U B church ladies at 6:30. Contact committee members Mrs. Bert Turner or Mrs. Coulson to attend the supper.
United Brethren Church led by Rev Evan Strong and Harold Mason announces Sunday school at 9 00 am and morning worship at 12 00 am with Harold Mason as superintendent Bill Bishop piano. Next Sunday February 7 World Service day features guest speaker Mrs L B Foster of Lovilia. A family church night is planned for February 10. Evangelistic services begin February 16 per Moravia Union.

Moravia fire department answered a 2 00 p m call Monday to extinguish a meadow fire at the Perry Mikels farm southwest of town. About 10 acres of meadow and a stack of loose hay were burned.

Moravia girls basketball defeated Cincinnati 79 to 65 on Saturday to win the Appanoose-Davis conference tournament for the fifth time in six years. Sawyer and Martin led with 28 and 23 points respectively, as the team built a large first-quarter lead and maintained it. Free throws and strong guard play bolstered the win with Sawvel and Judy Martin contributing on defense and offense.

Moravia businesses may close Saturday night if the Moravia basketball girls win Thursday, advancing them to the final playoff. Some say they will close regardless since Monday’s win already assured a berth for Saturday night.
