Remington Primary certificate awarded to Claudine Townsend for January with 36 words per minute. Navy chief Ed Firkins spoke to high school classes about U S submarine design and operations. Annual high school pictures were taken. weather caused rushed shots. eighth graders prep for inter-class basketball games.
The G C Tisue family on a southwest Moravia farm suffered a major loss when their home burned Saturday afternoon, likely from a defective flue. Neighbors helped salvage some goods before Moravia Fire Department arrived late, and outbuildings were protected. The Los is reported only partially covered by insurance. In other notes, school captains for each class were elected with Weneta Dudley as captain of the grade, Evelyn Hiatt Freshmen, Madge Hough Sophomores, Irene Fix Juniors, Weneta Dotson Seniors. The eighth grade drew a bye. Juniors face Sophomores and Freshmen face Seniors next. Two other items mention a local Declamation Contest judges Althea Green, Supt. Goeldner, and Mr. Michener in Cincinnati Monday, Earl Bayer and Richard Sneed also attending.
The Moravia A C basketball team defeated the Centerville Pep Club second team 16 5 in the opener and beat the first team 32 25 in the second, avenging a prior loss. Players Michener, F Oehler, T Oehler, Cline Reich, Hart Dotson, Orelup, McCrory and Smith played.
The directors of the Co-Operative Marketing Association met at the Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank Monday evening for election of officers and other business. All old officers were reelected: President H B Glick, Vice President W E Kelsey, Secretary Treasurer Dell Hellyer, Shipping Manager F P Hawk.
The Moulton Tribune notes rumors that Howard Ballew may run for State Representative from Appanoose county. He is described as an active Farm Bureau member and progressive farmer with unquestioned capability. Moravia Union publishers endorse Mr Hallow as a man of integrity, urging Republicans to nominate him for the same seat.
The Annual Legion Smoker and pin house was held Monday evening with many Legionnaires and Dads in attendance. Guests enjoyed games such as rock, pitch, domino, cribbage, and pool. Refreshments including sandwiches, ice cream, wafers, and coffee were served by the eats committee.

A capacity crowd at Moravia’s high echo auditorium welcomed the Inter-Club Council of four Women’s Clubs for a town gathering. Mayor, council, school leaders, ministers, and residents heard Charles E. Miller of Albia speak on “Neighbors,” urging a broader view of community and local progress. Performances by the orchestra, student groups, and a luncheon complemented the program.
Moravia High defeated Bloomfield 18 to 10 in a hard fought basketball game at Moravia Gym. Moravia's defense stifled Bloomfield’s taller lineup as the visitors rallied in the final seconds to secure the win. Moravia Bears guards Culler and Easter, center Cullers, forwards Gallaher Broshar Hawk starred. seventh graders also showcased depth. Moravia hosts Hedrick next Friday in a crucial home game.
Smith Bros L B and L 5 announce in The Moravia Union the opening of a new produce buying station in Moravia. They seek cream eggs and poultry and are located on the west side of the square.
The Church of Christ held Sunday School at 10 a m with communion and a Ladies Aid meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Attendance was good last Sunday and all are invited to return with guests. Mrs McKern's class had several perfect attendances in January including Mrs Main Mrs C Kincade Mrs R Kincade Mrs Venta Oehler Mrs Lena Wailes Miss Cora Broubur.
W C Bivin and assistants moved Wednesday into their new location once known as Main’s Hall. The change aims to improve customer access and a new scale system was installed at the site.
The Gold Band Class of United Brethren Sunday School at Albia hosted a surprise party for Mr and Mrs Arthur Gillespie at their Moravia home on Tuesday night, their eighth anniversary. Guests included Haley Scott Neal Billings Richard Mullinburg Merle Clark and others with refreshments and games. The Gillespies received best wishes for many more years. Also noted were Rev June and the Smth family visiting from Onkalousus Town and Sidney Helms of Des Moines visiting Albert Brainhums in Moravia.
A large crowd attended Thursday’s event at the Kensington School to support a piano purchase by the Kensington Club. The program featured the High School Orchestra, soloists, duets, and dances, followed by contests and carnival attractions. The event financially succeeded, covering the piano cost with surplus funds donated to the school. Mrs. C T Slavin is reported improving from illness.
The regular meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary will be held at the Legion Home on Tuesday evening, February 7.
The Gus C. Tisue Family expresses gratitude to neighbors and friends for kindness and help after a fire Saturday evening. They appreciate every act of support during the incident.
Dr. W. R. Keesey district superintendent will lecture Thursday evening at 7 20 at the local high school on America Wet or Dry. He just returned from an Anti-Saloon League meeting in New York City and will share informative insights with the community. Admission is free.
