Thespians Sponsor Barn Dance for Red Cross Benefit

Troupe 395 of the National Thespians will sponsor a Barn Dance in the school gym on February 20 for the Red Cross. The event features square dancing an old fiddlers contest a program coffee and doughnuts. Attendees are urged to wear old clothes and barnyard attire.

Moravia high school boys basketball heads to Cincinnati for the Appanoose county tournament. After a first round bye, they face Unionville on Wednesday evening. Numa, Moravia, Rathbun are seen as top contenders with strong showings expected in the semifinal and final rounds.

John Robinson Taken At Corydon

John Russell Robinson born near Albia Iowa September 4 1878 died January 26 1945 at Corydon aged 67 years four months and 21 days He was married to Gertrude McKern and left four children seven grandchildren and two sisters Survived by wife and children he was a pioneer in Corydon automobile business opening the first garage there in 1911 Services were held at the Wolf funeral Home and burial followed in the Corydon cemetery.

Ed Whicker Rites Held Sunday in Mora

Edward Whicker 70 of Rathbun died Friday night after hospital admission January 19. Born in Appanoose County to Benjan and Lydia Whicker he left three children Clifford Earl and Ruby MecDaniel. Survived by seven siblings and a sister Mrs George Eaton. Funeral at Turner Funeral Home Mora Sunday 2:30 pm officiated by Rev Herman A. Smith. Burial in Haines Cemetery. Minerettes Capture Appangose County Girls Title Again

The Numa Minerettes won the Appangose county girls basketball championship for the seventh consecutive year, defeating Rathbun 39 to 28 on Moravia court. Earlier tournament rounds saw Numa overpower Mystic 63-17 and Cincinnati 40-15, with Moravia upset by Moulton 19-18 in the first round and Cincinnati beating Udell 31-22. In the semifinals Numa beat Cincinnati 40-15 and outpaced Moulton 26-6 to reach the final.

Moravia hosts a nutrition training session at the Community building on Friday February 9 with director from Ames. The meeting opens at 10 o clock, a covered dish luncheon follows at noon. Attendees from Chariton and Taylor townships are expected to participate.

Boardman Home Visit After 33 Months In Pacific Action

Warrant Officer Clifton F. Boardman, 33 months in the southwest Pacific, arrives home for a visit with his parents Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Boardman and sister Mrs. A. J. Billings of Ottumwa. He will report to Hot Springs Arkansas February 19. The return follows two days after M/Sgt. Richard Burton’s return to duty. the two friends shared long overseas service and nearly met during furloughs. Lt. E. G. Jack Clark Receives Medical Discharge from Army in Loveland

Word reaches Loveland Colorado that Jack Clark has been medically discharged after about two years of service. He previously served at New Orleans Louisiana before returning to his former home. Two Township Farm Bureau Meeting Draws Crowd in Moravia

About 70 people attended a joint Farm Bureau session for Chariton and Taylor townships at the Community Building in Moravia on Friday evening. Earl Boyer led the business portion and a crop planning discussion followed with program and refreshment volunteers named. Glen Birlingmrsir, Appanoose County extension director, was present.

Masons Confer Two Third Degrees at Moravia Lodge

The Moravia Masonic lodge conferred two third degrees at a special meeting Monday afternoon and evening. Candidates were Ivan Harsh and Troy Adams. Guests from Blakesburg and Moulton lodges assisted with the work, followed by refreshments and social time.

A 21 day furlough here for M/Sgt Richard Burton ends as he departs Friday night for Santa Ana California to visit his parents Mr and Mrs Curtis Burton and other relatives. Cpl and Mrs Burdell Roberts of Detroit announce the birth of daughter Eileen Kay on January 20. Cpl Roberts is the son of Mr and Mrs Guy Roberts east of town and is stationed at a camp near Detroit. Former Mayor W G Firkins Dies at Home in Moravia

W G Firkins longtime Moravia resident and former mayor died at his home Monday January 29 after several weeks illness. He served on the Moravia school board and led Taylor township Democrats as chairman. Survived by eight children, 24 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral at Turner Funeral Home Moravia with Rev G M Talbott, burial at Hamilton cemetery. His life history notes birth 1860 in Altona Illinois and long railroad career in Iowa and Colorado.

Sadie J Stevens Dies At Moulton Iowa 77

Sadie J Miller Stevens aged 77 died Friday at her Moulton home after a stroke two weeks earlier. She first married John Wheaton producing 11 children including Artie Wheaton Pulaski Iowa and a son from New London Iowa, Pearl Roberts Grand Island Nebraska, and Edna Colling Ottumwa. There are 14 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She later married Jake Stevens who survives. Funeral services were Sunday at Hitchcock parlor at 1:00 pm with Rev. Simmons Bloomfield officiating. Burial followed in Pulaski.
