Plans Completed For World's Finest Fish Hatchery To Be Built Near Here
The State Conservation Commission unveiled plans for a warm water fish hatchery east of Rathbun dam. Estimated cost is $3 million with a potential annual visitors target over one million. Production includes 200000 pounds of catfish and other species such as muskies striped bass walleyes and northern pike. A construction contract could be let next year if funds are available. Funding seeks license increases from 4 to 5 per year and a $250000 state match to receive federal funds. A public visitation center is proposed. Water would draw up to 9200 gallons per minute from Rathbun lake. Eight to ten staff would operate the facility. The project aims to raise licenses to finance oversight and development.
