CAP Signup Begins Soon for Five to Ten Year Land Retirement
The CAP signup starts December 1 at the Appanoose ASCS county office. Dale Jones says the program pays $37.73 per acre annually for five to ten years on the corn base of a typical Appanoose county farm in exchange for unharvested ungrazed soil conserving grass legume cover. Additional payments from $6.00 to $10.20 per acre apply to cropland not in the base, and land may be kept out of the contract with farmed exceptions for feed grains. A small extra payment is offered to farmers who allow public hunting on retired land. Funds may be requested to help establish soil and water conserving cover.
