Mrs. W. G. Firkins a Moravia resident for nearly 40 years died at home Tuesday around 9 30 in ill health She was 71 born in Hamilton Iowa maiden name Mary E K Stilwell Married in Hamilton February 1887 Golden wedding celebrated two years ago Survived by husband and children Mia Cora Gordon George Jake Firkins William Jr E G Firkins EB O Firkins and Francis Mrs Wallis plus other relatives Funeral moved to Friday at 1 pm at the Christian church Rev W J Hastie officiating Burial in Hamilton Iowa
Mr and Mrs J A Tadlock hosted a cooperative Thanksgiving meal at their Ottumwa home on Thursday November 24. Guests included Mr and Mrs A C Main and daughters Deloris Harriett Lee and Mary Rose Mr and Mrs S H Boyer Mr and Mrs Lee Tadlock and Lorene Mr and Mrs Grant Tadlock Imogene Basil Joe Irene Henry Glosser of Blakesburg Mrs Austin Swaim Goldston and Franklin Mr and Mrs Raymond Swaim Mr and Mrs Harold Swaim Billy and Marilyn. Afternoon callers were Mrs A B Shull Mrs Neal Burton and Evelyn of Richland.
Announcement states Madge DuVall will replace Misa Isabel Rosa as Moravia school pre primary and first grade teacher after the holidays. DuVall, Moravia native and Drake University trained, currently teaches in Cambridge Iowa with noted success. Mies Ross resigns to marry Dean Vaught of Monroe Iowa.
Rollie McDonough and Tamily thank the firefighters who assisted during a Monday morning blaze. Though the home could not be saved, the responders helped save many belongings and showed kindness.
About sixty five relatives and friends gathered at the Howard Whisler home Tuesday evening honoring Mr. Whisler with a birthday party. The affair also observed in the birthday of E. G. Hawk. The evening was spent visiting and with games. Refreshments of sandwiches, pie and coffee were served.
The menu lists Creamed Chicken over biscuits with mashed potatoes sweet potatoes green beans and beet pickles. Also includes a daily salad and butter.
Mr and Mrs Paul Boyer announce the marriage of their daughter Ada to Louis Schwab of Centerville at the Presbyterian church parsonage in Unionville Missouri on September 20 1938 with Rev Gray officiating The couple will reside in Centerville Mildred Roberta and Robert Clark served as attendants Mrs Schwab is a Moravia high school graduate class of 1938 and Mr Schwab is a Centerville high school graduate class of 1986

Moravia’s Mayor L B Hiatt urges residents to participate in the regular monthly clean up to prevent winter debris buildup. He apologizes for missed pickups last time due to bad weather and asks that rubbish be placed in proper containers accessible to the street, noting containers are often left behind after disposal.
Karl LeCompte of Corydon newly elected to represent the 5th Town District in Congress visited Moravia on a Wednesday morning. He plans to travel to Washington around the start of the year to begin his term.
Jean Kathryn Broshar of Waterloo Iowa, a senior at Waterloo high school with 900 students, selected as one of thirteen members of the all high school play cast. She came to attend a family funeral for Miss Emma Scott.

Maxine Workman daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Workman of Centerville married John Main son of Mr and Mrs Runzell Main of Moravia in a Sunday afternoon ceremony at the Nazarene parsonage. Rev H C Miller officiated. Teal blue attire with wine accessories featured the bride’s ensemble. The couple will reside on a farm near Moravia after a wedding reception hosted by the bride’s parents.
Moravia hosts the pre liminary state declamatory contest Friday evening with Udell and Unionville sending speakers. Moravia entries include Williard Cloyed Josephine McDonald and Delbert Donahoo while Udell members are Harold Byers Helen Stuckey Nalda Zinson Warren Proctor Mildred Harrington and Dwight Harrington. The event starts at 7 30 pm with Moravia music department entertainment and free admission for rural eighth graders.
An error in announcing winners changed the order of the top two in the Moravia high school home declamatory contest. Judge ranked Willard Cloyed first and Donald Whitehead second in the oratorical division. Cloyed will represent the school in the preliminary state contest Friday evening.
The Band Auxiliary will meet Friday at 3 PM in the school music room. Mrs Rollie McDonough and Mrs John Dille lead as president and secretary. Local trips include visits to Paris Missouri and Iowa City with updates on medical care and Thanksgiving gatherings among families in the community.
A wedding at the Christian church parsonage in Albia joined Ruth Hough and Ivan Boyer on November 27 1938. Ruth is a Moravia High School graduate and teacher. Ivan aids his father near Darby and works for Mid-Continent Oil. They will reside at Pella Town.
Eugene Wilcox a four year letter man from Moravia high school joins Albia Junior College for the season opener against Washington Junior College at Albia. Reports say Wilcox is fitting well in college play and showing up strongly in the early games.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Main hosted a cooperative Thanksgiving dinner for their children and grandchildren. Most attendees joined, with absent guests including Mr. and Mrs. Guy Jones and their Annandale, Minnesota children. Present were Russell Main, John Main, Otha Hiatt and family, Harold Argo and daughters, Carl Main and daughter Carol Ann, Carl Long and children, and LaFawn Maini of Des Moines.
Regular meeting of Antiquity Lodge No. 252 A F and A M Monday evening December 5 with election of officers. All Masonic brothers urged to attend. Oysters provided by D E Bishop W M. Thanksgiving guests at Rollie McDonough home included J C Buckmaster and family Ottumwa Brice McDonough Leon and Buckmaster and Luse families. Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmins was served at noon. Frig Horn and Kenseth Blackman returned to Oxford Junction after vacation with M K Blackman. Guests at Blackman home included Don Blackman student at the University of Iowa and Helen Carter Des Moines. Preston Hiatt and son Charles Harold Burton Knappville spent Thanksgiving at parental homes.

Emma Scott died November 24 1938 at St Joseph hospital Centerville after a long illness. She was 71, born October 29 1867 in Monroe County Iowa resident of Moravia 39 years. Survived by brother Emmett Scott and nephew Jimmie Scott and niece Mrs Stella Broshar. Funeral at Turner Funeral Home Moravia 2 p m Sunday November 27 officiated by Rev R L Brown, burial Moravia Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Paul Boyer entertained at a cooperative Thanksgiving dinner honoring their daughter Ada recently married to Louis Schwab of Centerville. The bride's cake featured a miniature bride and groom. Guests included Schwabs, Boyers, Houser family, Quick family, Miller and Wissier guests from Centerville, and extended relatives at the Wineler bone home.
