Iconium Methodist Homecoming Program Sunday

Iconium Methodist church held a Sunday afternoon homecoming program with a full slate of music and readings. The event featured solos, choir numbers, skits by the Sunday school and young adult classes, a history talk by Neva Richards, a guest sermon by Rev. Simms, and closing hymns.

Whisler Reunion Elects Clarence Whisler President 1959

The 82nd Whisler reunion at Centerville city park on August 3 1958 drew 741 attendees. Carl Phillips chaired the business session in Le D Gent’s absence. Clarence Whisler was elected president for 1959 and many photos were taken as attendees enjoyed swimming and visiting.

Rural Carriers Receive Safe Driving Awards

Moravia White Sox defeated the Albia Tigers 8 to 4 to tighten the Al-ILo-Mo Babe Ruth league race Monday evening. Burns and Keith Helmick led hitting while Woodward Tomlin and Cary McCoy added hits. Moravia was without Ed Oehler and Dave Mundy. Jim Smith and Terry Tuttle filled in. Next game at Lovilia Friday.

Monroe County Fair Draws Large Crowd and Exhibits

Monroe county 4-H fair and fall festival drew strong crowds with 160 beef cattle head and more hogs and sheep than usual. A new demonstrations building hosted girls 4-H displays while commercial exhibits occupied the former women and children's building. Blue ribbon winners included Linda Chance, Sandra Stewart, Linda King, Patty Poole and others. red ribbons went to several pairs.

Mr and Mrs Jack Long and Vanessa joined the Arnold Out kamp and Art Boeckleman families in Des Moines over the weekend. A funeral for Mrs Alta Comer drew many local attendees including Mr and Mrs Winston DuVall Mr and Mrs Warren DuVall and several others from the area at the Bunch church. Don Tscherter and children returned from Des Moines after visiting sister in law Wilbur Adkins. Clifford Paxston and Ann joined the Whisler reunion in Centerville park Sunday. Eric Main and family with Betty Tarbell visited Helma Tisue Monday night.

Moravia Softball Drops State Tournament Opener at Boone

Moravia softball suffered a 5-1 opening round loss to Des Moines Bankers Life Bar Bee at Boone Tuesday. Pitcher Dick Johnson hurled a 2 hit game with 12 strikeouts as Moravia tied 1-1 in the fifth before four seventh inning runs broke the game open. No upcoming games are scheduled, but future contests are anticipated.

Moravia School Names England as Science and Math Instructor

The Moravia Community school board hired John M. England, 54, from Stanley Iowa, to teach science and math for the 1958 59 term, replacing C W Craver who will teach at Winfield high school. England previously taught in Warrensburg Illinois. The district resumes Aug 25 with a hot lunch program starting Aug 26 and teacher meetings set for Aug 20 and 21.

Mrs. Alta Comer Dies After Stroke in Iowa

Mrs. Alta Alma Comer 68, born August 7, 1889 in Davis county, died Saturday afternoon August 2 after a stroke at Davis County Hospital Bloomfield.
