Hundreds attended the Appanoose county gathering despite downpour that moved events from Moravia City Park to cover. Rev B G Hawkins led services at United Brethren church. honors were given to leaders Samuel Whiting and Nellie Miller as readings, music, and remarks highlighted the program.
J B Sneed has been appointed state examiner in the state auditor s office. He and another examiner are auditing the books of Dubuque county officials in Dubuque, with a three to four week stay planned before transfer to another county seat. Mrs Sneed and Elizabeth remain in Moravia. after September Elizabeth leaves for the coast and Mrs Sneed plans to join her husband.
The program lists marches and waltzes performed by the band including Overland, Devalon, Olivetta, Success, The Fashion, The Old Oaken Bucket, On The War Path, Sabbath Morn, Think A Little Kindly of Me, The Crown Prince, Glorious Tribute, de Waleneuve TM Galap King, and ends with The Star Spangled Banner.

The feature game of the kittenball week was a 7 to 0 shutout win by Smith nine over Beery managed tern. It marked the season’s only shutout with players and spectators surprised by the result though elated by the score. The Tuesday game featured strong batting and quick play ending darkness did not hinder late innings. Individual scores included Smith 1h Whicker 11 Beery 9 Winsler 6 Winsler 18 Whicker 3 Smith 7 Beery 0, with Winsler downing Heery in an earlier match. Schedule lists Winsler vs Smith, Whicker vs Beery, and Smith vs Whicker across August dates.
The Union carries free announcements for local family reunions with dates ranging August 7 through September 21 at various places including Miller Place Chariton Moravia Boyer Grove Centerville Salem Church and Kincade No. 60. An attendance contest at Kensington Club produced post event hosting notes and a schedule of upcoming games with Winsler Whicker Beery Smith and others.
The fifth annual Day family reunion gathered 68 relatives in Ottumwa and nearby towns last Sunday at Wildwood Park. Officers elected for four years included Russell Day as president J T Day as vice president Mya O Day as secretary treasurer and Otis Ivelan on the entertainment committee. A full day of visiting culminated with a splendid dinner.
Mt Pleasant businessman Wim Hoaglin, who bought the Moon store stock in Albia and later sold some at auction in Meravia, struggles to settle with creditors. Mt Pleasant attendees witnessed the bankruptcy hearing before Judge Styfuree in Washington. Hoaglin’s attorney cited circumstances beyond control that delay any propounded settlement. Attorneys questioned Hoaglin about certain transactions. meeting adjourned. A report will guide whether Judge Dewey sets a date for a hearing on solvency, likely within a month unless a jury trial is demanded, which could push to September. The local store is expected to stay open through the hearing.
Reverend B G Hankins of Mystic shows five large yellow Ponderosa tomatoes clinging to a single stem. The five fruits weigh just under five pounds, about one and a half ounces shy. Visitors Editor Farrand and J H Martin visited, sharing tales of 4 H Club activities.
A humorous start leads into planning for Iconium’s Sunday and Monday Homecoming and Diamond Jubilee. Moravia’s neighboring towns, a marching band, autogiro demonstrations, and talks from notable figures are planned, with a full two day program announced by Rev. J. W. Zerby and a large local committee.
Mrs. Harriet E. Patti, 45, living on a Hilton farm, was arrested in Mendota after attempting to pass a counterfeit U S Treasury check. Held in Unionville jail as federal authorities pursue others in a suspected nationwide counterfeit ring.
Announcement to the Union says the annual Salem United Brethren church reunion will be held Sunday September 11 at the Old Salem church, 444 miles west of Mareyva. The church, mother of UB churches in the south fourth state, has not held regular services for years. Everyone invited to bring well filled baskets and enjoy the day.
