Moravia started laying rock on Wabash Avenue after Friday night rain. The town’s crew spread rock from highway 60 east to the F. P. Hawk corner, with plans to tackle streets near the school and the area north to the town limits. A new rock crusher ordered by the county is delayed, slowing progress until it arrives.
A letter from E O Firkins immigration inspector at Nogales Ariz to his father W G Firkins describes the copper mine at Aho Arizona active on three shifts. The mine is among the world’s largest with about 25000 tons of copper ore mined daily. George Jay son of Austin Jay has worked at Aho mine for over two decades.
The fourth quarterly conference of the United Brethren church was led by Rev G E McCannon of Des Moines. W P Davis was re-elected a trustee for five years. Mrs Zell Catlen was chosen delegate to the conference at Vinton on Sept 18, with Mr Davis named alternate.
The Rev A M Smith will fill the pulpit at Albis Methodist church on Sunday, in place of Rev A R Keegey who is away on vacation.
Roy Matherly went Monday to the Veterans' hospital in Des Moines for treatment of facial paralysis. He was accompanied by Chester Broshar and Lester Rain.

Honorees William Stufflebeam of Centerville and Olin Swaim celebrated their fifty eighth birthdays and lifelong friendship. Dozens from Ottumwa Centerville Eldon Nevada Moravia West Grove Pulaski and Wyoming attended with many relatives and friends listed by name.
A meeting of the ladies division is scheduled for 1 30 Wednesday evening in the Community Building. The election of officers will be the main business for the session.
Mary Rose Main underwent a tonsillectomy Thursday at Center Ville and is reported recovering satisfactorily. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. U. O. Main.
Francia Wayne Proctor aged two, son of Mr and Mrs Marion Proctor of near Unionville, died Wednesday morning at home. Funeral services set for Thursday at Union Chapel at 2 PM. He was born August 20, 1988 and is survived by his parents, three sisters Eldora Edith and Marjorie, two brothers Warren and Thomas, and grandparents Tom Proctor and Mr and Mrs Peter Stocker.
Children of E H Boyer and families gathered at the old home for a picnic. About 111 members were in the group with 83 attending. A short program was held and officers were elected for the coming year.
The third annual Hivin-Robb descendants reunion was held at Centerville park. Ira Robb of Centerville was elected president and Carl Bivin of Moravia was named secretary after a bountiful dinner. The group planned the fourth reunion for the last Sunday in July next year.
The Mothers Study club will meet at Mrs Wilma Whicker's home on Monday with Mrs Vers Zike as program leader.
Funeral services for Mrs. John Lockman were held Saturday afternoon at Knedler Funeral Home Blakesburg. Mrs. Lockman 72 died at her home east of Moravis last Thursday with Rev Luther Childs Centerville officiating at burial in Moravia cemetery. Florence Bell Dotson born Appanoose county Iowa July 12 1868 died at home near Moravia July 25 1940 aged 72 years 13 days. Married October 7 1888 to John R Lockman who survives with four children Miley and Ray near Moravia Mrs Myrtle Huber near Blakesburg and Eugene near Ottumwa. grandchildren Lavern Anita Huber and Phyllis Lockman Franklin and Ronald Lockman. siblings Jessie Simmons Clara Cousins Fred Dotson Moravia Nell Pilkington Albia John Dotson Adellara Maude Whiteside Martha Thompson Keokuk Edith Prose Monroe City Mo. The July 15 farm price report shows a 25 percent land hog price rise and another drop in grain quotations. Excluding corn, farm prices declined about 30 percent since April 15, while Iowa corn prices rose 4 cents per bushel. Hog prices gained $1.15 per hundred, and livestock and farm produce mostly held steady to higher. The lower feed costs helped raise Iowa feeding ratios to near year best. ICONIUM HOMECOMING The annual Iconium Homecoming will be held next Sunday.
Eloise Argo joins the senior Moravia band as an oboe player this summer and becomes a freshman in Moravia High School. Robert Brown receives a four year advanced technic study award as first alto sax and is the youngest to be honored. Eva Rose, guest soloist from Montana, will sing two soprano solos with the band next week. Edward Brown, first clarinet, performs Italiana by Clay Smith in the current program.
In Hilton church Friday evening the ladies aid hosted a post nuptial shower for Mr. and Mrs. Warren Rouse. About 90 guests attended the social evening and refreshments. The couple opened gifts for their new home at the Rouge parental residence. Many Rouse relatives joined the event including Albert Rouse and daughter, Harry Tisue family, Lewis Rouse family, Roy Spencer family, Arch Herron family, Claude Hawk family, R. G. Kingery family, J. E. Spencer family, Gerald Gay family, Oscay Moore family, Roy Ellison and others from Galesburg Illinois.
The Foreign and Home Missionary societies of the Methodist Church will hold their annual Christmas party at the church Thursday. A noon dinner will precede the afternoon program. Gifts will be collected for foreign missions and funds for the foreign missionary society. Committees include Program led by Mrs. T. R. Gardner and Mrs. A. E. Shull. Decorating by Mrs. C. C Coulson and Mrs. D. E. Bishop. Invitation by Mrs. Fred Blumenstock and Mr. Frank Selby. Menu by Mrs. W. H. Young and Mrs. W. L. Palmer.
Mr and Mrs Keith Roberts of Searsboro welcomed a 10 pound baby boy at their home. The couple, former Moravia residents, are supported by grandparents Mr and Mrs Wm Tolin and Mr and Mrs Guy Roberts.
Moravia softball notched three victories in a week, defeating Unionville on their field and rolling past Mystic and Parker Clothes of Centerville. Key moments included Firkins and Hellyer homers, Underwood driving in runs, and a multi-run burst in the Reds sixth and eighth frames. The Mystic game featured a six-run outburst in the second and a dramatic scoring sequence as Whitehead slid home on Cortesio’s controversial play.
