Dairy feeding tips warn of winter slump by ISU expert

Floyd Arnled of Iowa State College warns that high producing cows cannot absorb enough grain to cover both milk yield and body maintenance. A 1000-pound cow producing 50 pounds of 4 percent milk would need 150 pounds of grain daily, a load beyond capacity. He recommends grain for cows producing 20 to 25 pounds of milk or one pound of butterfat daily, with 1 pound of grain per 5 to 7 pounds of milk. A ration of 500 pounds corn and cobmeal plus ground oats and high protein supplement is advised. Transition to pasture should be gradual to protect digestion and milk flavor. The piece also notes poultry guidance and lists several local visitors and visits.
