Moravia residents head to the polls to determine whether the school board may proceed with constructing a new high school. Officials state other town projects, such as a potential water system, will not affect school tax funding.
Residents face a proposed $290,000 high school project funded by a water system opt in and a small property tax levy. The plan would raise about 6 mills for school purposes, leaving Moravia’s district tax rate among the lowest in comparable districts and area.
Clear thinking voters will see many reasons for approving today’s election question. The issue ties economic gains to improved education in the community.
Vera Moore spent Tuesday afternoon with Mildred Tarbell and visited Jessie McAninch. Rita Gardner spent Tuesday night with Connie McAninch. Ernestine Argo entertained the Clover Leaf Club at her home. Several residents visited relatives and shopped in nearby towns over the week.
An afternoon at the McAninch home featured Connie and Max McAninch hosting the local 4-H club Monday evening for a social event with the boys present.
Salem Hagel Hellyer and Sandra Whitehead attended 4-H at Linda Pearl Whitehead's home and stayed overnight. Several families visited Des Moines and Ottumwa, with dinners and weekend gatherings at various homes. Local residents attended events, birthdays, and cancer drives, and members helped with a birthday celebration at Delbert Calhoun's home.
The Hap py Helpers 4-H club met April 14 1959 at Linda Whiteheads home with 10 members present. Roseann Calhoun presided as roll call and minutes were read. Demonstrations included How to cut out a pattern by Roseann Calhoun and Nancy Mosley and How to look 10 pounds lighter by Shirley Calhoun.
Voters in Moravia Appanoose County Iowa face an election to decide a proposed ordinance granting Iowa Southern Utilities Company its successors and assigns the right to erect maintain and operate a natural gas distribution system in Moravia for 25 years The poll site is the Community Building basement and ballots present Yes or No options for the proposed ordinance and franchise to lay mains and apparatus in streets alleys and public places for distributing gas to town inhabitants and outside areas The notice specifies polling hours from 8 am to 8 pm and includes instructions for marking ballots.
The Moravia Iowa Town Council, by ordinance adopted April 14 1960, grants Iowa Southern Utilities Company a 25 year gas franchise to lay mains in town streets. The ordinance sets service obligations, safety measures, rate regulation rights, and requires a special election on May 18 1989 for final voter approval.
