The report questions the sanity and integrity of local forecasts as Ramblin notes expectations of a very wet April. While confidence falters, observers still see fields with yellow corn on local farms. southern areas reportedly struggled to grow enough last year for home brew and livestock feed.
Farmers in the tall corn state face dry fields and poor rains while two large haulers haul corn from Albia to Sioux City. Weather has stirred up strong winds, raising wind damage claims as hog prices rebound on vetoed farm legislation. A crested night heron roost on Wabash Avenue draws local wildlife interest as observers wonder about the bird’s migration.
Paul Cridlebaugh reports a small herd of deer feeding in his pasture near Rathbun dam discussions. Mrs. and the boys viewed the animals after they returned home, cautioning neighbors not to disturb the deer or attempt to harvest venison.
Community members attended church events at Wesley church and district rally in Oska loosa. A Living Wood in Japan film was shown, Easter decorations featured, and a 4-H weiner roast and local visits occurred across Centerville Des Moines and nearby homes. Various families shared meals and hosted guests with Kent Hiatt, Jerry Pettibone, Bert Meadows, and Don Pettibone among those hosting or attending.
Udell residents Mrs H B Spring and Mr and Mrs Lawrence Morlan with families gathered Thursday for Tommy Morlan's first birthday. Mae Morlan visited Joe Moore’s home after a week with Alvin Springs. Anna Thistlewaite returned home from Centerville after wintering with her children.
Over the weekend families in the Centralville area hosted relatives and faced moves. Elmer Siechlager and family planned a move to Center Ville while Raymond Hughes hosted an old fashioned charivari and Mary Harrett returned from Illinois. Several others visited, cared for illness, or learned of relatives in accidents, including Bobbie Whisler after a Tulare truck crash and Anna and her daughter after a hospital call.
Des Moines residents Donna and Terry Rose visited the Dell Hellyer home Friday night. Bible teachers trained in Centerville. Delbert Calhoun and family hosted guests in Ottumwa and Lineville funeral attendance noted. Multiple local families gathered for dinners and birthdays including the Calhoun, Jennings, Whitehead, and Runnells households with intercity visits to Ottumwa and Montezuma.
Sunday evening at the Lloyd Brown home included Mr and Mrs Raymond Perry and others. Several families attended showers, calls, and banquets in Alba and at the Dell Hellyer and Kenneth Gladfelder homes. The McCord family joined athletic and F H A banquets, with Mrs Raymond Perry working at the Albia sale barn.
Mike and the local batterry duo participated in a Sunday ball event at Dele Hert Calhoun, drawing community attention and casual spectators.
The regular Tay lor Aid met with Mrs. Virginia Pettibone on April 11 1986. Present were Theo Miller Karl Fischer John Peterson Dick Johnson Ricky Jay Wilson Alan Linda Trenton Wilson Ivan Harsh Loyd Carter Derry Pettibone Lute Hiatt Bert Meadows Dick Wilson Mar deena White Janice and Centerville guest Ioan Mihalovich. Afternoon work focused on selecting nut meats.
