A garden note reports twelve rosa bushes planted by Mr and Mrs C M McFatridge last season. All but one thrived, the lone non performer named Herbert Hoover. The item riffs on political names and small town gardening antics with dated travel and local color references.
An antique contract dated December 26, 1830s in Clark County Ohio outlines David Syler teaching reading writing and arithmetic for three months under school directors. C B Moravia Chapter holds a regular meeting Tuesday evening at 8 with degree work scheduled. Margaret Callen serves as secretary.

A pageant The Challenge of the Cross will be presented by women from local churches followed by the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper in remembrance of the Last Supper. The service emphasizes observation of the sacrament on Good Friday.
The menu features fried fish with mashed potatoes tomatoes and macaroni plus baked parsnips and gelatine salad. Cord bread butter caramel dumplings whipped cream coffee complete the meal in classic style.

Moravia high school opened the baseball season Tuesday by defeating Exline 7 to 1. Pitcher George Hellyer limited Exline to three hits while Lemaster caught behind the plate. Moravia committed three errors to Exline’s six as they prepare to play games at Bishop lot near the Milwaukee depot due to school grounds landscaping.
Taylor township received a superior rating at the Achievement Day meeting of Appanoose county Farm Bureau women at Centerville's Methodist church. The exhibit featured seat weaving and early American antiques from Mrs. C A Turner. Attendees honored for perfect attendance included Mrs. Charles Coffin, Mrs. John Dodd, and Mrs. Stella Carter, who received corsages. local attendees listed numerous Taylor township residents and leaders.
Moravia wins county table tennis tournament with a decisive final match 21-17 18-21 21-18 19-21 21-16 over Centerville as Moravia players Veach Hell yer and Russo compete. Unionville and Moravia claim strong showings in singles and doubles with multiple forfeits noted.
Mr and Mrs Harvey Ashby hosted a Tuesday evening farewell courtesy for Mr and Mrs Paul Coffin who are moving to Moulton. Three tables of bridge were played with Juanita Smith and Paul Broshar achieving the high score. The event featured Mia and the Coffins receiving a lovely gift.
Cleo Barnes left Moravia last week for La Salle Illinois where he accepted an assistant manager position at a McClellan store. He previously worked at the Scott store in Centerville and before that for the Kresge Company in Moline Illinois. Mrs Q F Blumer and daughter Bonnie visit the Burkes and Blumers in town.

Methodist Episcopal Church schedules Sunrise Easter breakfast after a 6:00 a.m. sunrise service led by the Epworth and Intermediate Leagues. Morning worship at 11:00, Epworth League at 3:00, Evening worship at 7:30, and Sunday School at 10:00 with a class gathering at 7:30. Easter music highlighted by joyful singing.
The U B A id menu lists meat loaf potatoes gravy green beans sweet potatoes Easter eggs pineapple cheese salad pickles jelly whipped cream. The 20th Century club met with Mrs H E Watts who spoke on Henry Ford and Mrs Reich described his activities as a schoolmaster. Roscall was answered with household suggestions.
The Temple couple Mr and Mrs John Temple celebrated fifty years of marriage with open house at their Moravia home on Friday March 31 with fifty attendees. Family friends and neighbors enjoyed social hours while Tom Philby performed a vocal piece with guitar and Carol Broshar sang two songs.
The Moravia Chapter 0. E. S. held a school session led by Mrs. Frata Brown of Bloomfield followed by a 7:00 PM banquet at the Church of Christ dining parlor for members and guests. The evening included gifts to instructor Mrs. Brown and Worthy Matron Mrs. Bertha Broshar and Cecil Coulson’s initiation into the order.
The senior class held a party at Doyle Hampton's mother's home last Saturday evening. Attendees played games and did April Fool's day related stunts, with a large turnout and high enjoyment. Refreshments included sandwiches pickles fruit salad and cake as the evening closed.
The United Brethren church choir directed by Ray Pierce will present The Crucifixion an Easter cantata by J Steiner on Sunday April 9 at 7 30 o’clock.
Visitors from Hartford Glenwood Cincinnati and Albia attended Moravia lodge’s regular meeting. About 45 men were present as third degree work was exemplified by officers and brethren. Roscoe Day was the candidate for the work.
Mr and Mrs Malcolm Pilkington return to Flagstaff Arizona after a ten day visit with relatives here and at Albia They traveled from a West Indies cruise visiting the Panama Canal Zone Caracas Venezuela Martinique St Thomas Jamaica Cuba and Trinidad Island Mrs Pilkington is sister to Mrs John Johnson Warren and Otha Dyvall
Jacquelyn Winsler, a Moravia Iowa junior at Teachers College Index Kirksville, won the gold medal for first place in the poetry contest at the Pi Kappa Delta regional tourney in Excelsior Springs Missouri held March 29 to April 1. She also placed fourth in women's oratory. Des Moines notices reference local observers and events nearby.
Nancy E. Campbell and John Temple wed March 31 1889 at the home of Justice Eugene Horner in Moravia. They lived most of their married life in or near Moravia with seven years in Wyoming. Born Temple in Hamilton Iowa 1861 and Campbell in Wapello County, they have a son Ernest and two grandchildren, John Edward and Helen Jean Temple. Guests included numerous relatives and friends led by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Temple and daughter Helen Jean of Naperville Ill, and many Campbells and local residents.
The next Parent-Teacher Association meeting will be held at the school building Monday, April 10, at 7 30 o clock. Officers will be elected and the program includes dramatization by the primary class safety songs by grades three and four directed by Mrs Wilbur Harris articles by Mrs Paul Broshar and Mrs C M McFatridge a vocal duet by Ray Pierce and Bruce Gardner a talk and picture on tuberculosis by county nurse Miss Agnes O Leary and other items. Mrs Chester Broshar hosted the Progressive club Friday with three tables of bridge. High score went to Mrs Wm Young and Mrs Lester Brain won the traveling prize. Guests included Mrs C M McFatridge Mrs C Coulson and Mrs Emil Halden. Refreshments were served.
