A smokehouse at Lyndon McDanel’s Main Station community home burned Sunday morning, likely from a roof spark. The dwelling was saved with help from Centerville and Moravia fire departments. the porch suffered damage and four windows shattered by the heat. Patrons at the nearby Main Station church aided before firefighters arrived.

Moravia reported a strong showing with 11 Division I ratings among 17 entries. Soloists earning Division II included James Main and Richard Goughnour among others, while Verna Rouse and Georgiana Winslet earned Division I in vocal and clarinet events. After four months in the army Kenneth Tuttle returned to Des Moines from Yokohama Japan and arrived at his father Karl Tuttle’s home. He received discharge at Camp Beale California on March 16 and will be on terminal leave until April 15. He traveled from California to Des Moines by plane.
