Protect Apples Against Borers in Blizzard-Damaged Orchards
Iowa State College extension entomologist Harold Gunderson warns that apples injured by a November blizzard are highly vulnerable to borers this summer. He advises wrapping trunks from ground to branches with tree wrapping paper to help stressed trees recover, using multiple layers if needed. Dead trees should be cut and burned before May 15 to remove infestation sources, and all new plantings require wrapping to guard against sunscald and borers for at least two years.
