Backward Time at the Fair With McHootsie and Brownies

A fragmented reminiscence of a rural fair scene featuring a buggy, oats and hay, nags with spavin and heaves, a snow covered cutter, and a crowd in colorful attire. F. F. A. Boys Collect Scrap Iron for Defense Program

The local F. F. A. chapter held a Monday meeting as part of a scrap iron campaign to support the present defense program. Boys collect scrap, paid modestly, with John Veach of International Harvester coordinating the effort. Farmers are urged to notify the chapter or Veach of scrap metal availability and to arrange sheep dipping schedules to save travel and tires for the crew.

The Entire Citizens ticket was reelected as mayor and council, in the town election held on the first Monday with the lightest turnout in years. Votes show D. K. York Players Present The Forgotten Man at United Brethren

A large audience heard York college players perform The Forgotten Man a one act religious drama at United Brethren church Sunday evening. Directed by Charlotte Rozetta Miller, the cast included William White Arlene Johnson Arlina Benson Iria Johnson Lute Allison Levi Huebert and Bruce Herrick, York students. Rev. Mr. Core of York district field manager showed campus pictures before the play. Rev. LeRoy Pullman of the Methodist church attended, leading to the dismissal of their evening services.

Moravia School Launches Defense Stamp Drive

Moravia Public Schools students participate in a defense stamp program with class parties during the week of March 16. Students pay ten cents for admission to parties and many buy twenty five cent stamps, receiving stamp books, with sales totaling 49.06 dollars to date across grades.

Postmaster Reports Bond Sales Continue Up in Moravia

Moravia post office reports defense bond and stamp purchases remained strong through January February and into March. There was steady demand for bonds with some sizable amounts, and only a couple of days showed little or no activity at the bond and stamp window.

Imogene Hiatt reports Moravia High to host a Junior Senior party in the gym on April 3 changing the banquet to a garden themed party with light refreshments in school colors old rose and green. Juniors from the sophomore class will staff as waiters and waitresses in pink and white pinafores with white blouses, and male servers in blue jeans and white shirts. Entertainment includes welcome by Wayne Allen, response by Wayne Hiatt, music requests, dancing, and car games. about 120 attendees including faculty are expected. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Gerald Hauk Now in North Ireland with American Forces

Mrs Lea Johrygon received a letter and card Monday from her son Pvt Claus Gerald Eugene Hauk now in North Ireland with American forces. He said they landed in Ireland on March 5 after a rough voyage. Gerald is with a medical unit and has served about a year after training at Glathorne, La last summer and fall.

Naomi McCrory to wed Charles N. Poney in June at Trinity Lutheran

Announcement from Harry McCrory of Moravia states Naomi McCrory of Ottumwa will marry Charles N. Poney, son of Charles F. and Mrs. Poney of Ottumwa. The wedding is set for June 1 at 8 p.m. in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Miss McCrory is a 1937 Ottumwa High School graduate and works at Newberry's in Ottumwa.

Death of Mrs. Sarah Arnold

News of the sudden death of Mrs. Sarah Arnold at her son Beryl Arnold’s home east of town around 9 15 p m Tuesday. She was about 82 and had lived in the area most of her life, with many friends mourning her passing. An obituary will be published later.

The Little Corporal Terry Mark Martin arrived Saturday March 28 to help his brother Larry Max Martin and sisters Joyce and Judy care for their mother Laura Jean Oehler Martin while Daddy Corporal Max A. Obituary details the life of Mrs. Curg McCoy Jennie Abernathy born 1865 near Blakesburg. She lived in Monroe and Appanoose counties, married Lycurgus McCoy in Ottumwa 1898, died 1942 in Albia. Moravia to Host Patriotic Meeting and Rally

The Moravia band and stamp committee plans a patriotic rally at the school gymnasium on April 18 evening. Music by the school band, pledge explanation for bands and stamps, and a keynote address by an out of town speaker are slated. No pledges at the meeting. canvass starts next day. Death of W Whisler Recalls Long Farm Life in Unionville Area

W Whisler died Sunday morning of a heart attack at his farm home near Unionville. He was born July 14 1870 the son of Samuel and Miranda Igler. He married Frankie Morrison Sept 4 1890 and they celebrated their golden anniversary in 1940. Eleven children were born to the union, with several surviving including Emma Stark Udell Ella McCoy Albia Wilbur Ottumwa Howard Moravia Walter Jr. Williamsburg Ada Whisler Rolfe Essie Unionville Bertha Laughlin Dows and Lloyd Russell. He leaves two sisters, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Burial was at Fairview cemetery after service at Fairview Church of the Brethren conducted by Rev Jas A Wilson and Rev Orlando Ogden. He had been in failing health for some time and was hospitalized in Centerville prior to death.

Pvt Richard Burton Graduates From Army Air School

Pvt Richard J Burton son of Mr and Mrs Curtis Burton Moravia Iowa will graduate April 8 from the large Air Corps Technical School at Keesler Field Mississippi after a 19 week course. His class will be dispersed among Army Air Forces units to service and maintain planes. The curriculum covers aircraft maintenance fundamentals structures hydraulics propellers instruments engines electrical systems fuel systems engine operation and inspection of single and multi motor aircraft.
