Moravia High to Stage My Fair Lady This Weekend

Moravia high school music department presents My Fair Lady at 7 30 pm Friday and Saturday with Michele Brown as Eliza Doolittle and Marty Massmen as Professor Higgins. About 50 cast members perform with Pauli Tapper directing and Tina Fosenburg as stage manager.

Moravia Firemen Respond To Dual Grass Fires

Moravia firemen were called out twice Sunday to grass fires west of Hilton church on land of Ralph Spencers and Arada Tibbets and at Honey Creek State Park. Albia fire department assisted west of Hitton. The Honey Creek blaze covered about three acres near the camping area. Park Ranger Joe Murphy urged campers to watch campfires as dry conditions persist.

Ottumwa Generating Station site work set for April start

Iowa Southern Utilities Co announces early April site work on the Ottumwa generating station near Chillicothe six miles northwest of Ottumwa. Mc Aninch Corp of Norwalk awarded a contract over $3 million for grading, railroad embankment, bridge, fencing and drainage. Completion expected later this year. coal plant along Des Moines River aims for late 1980 operation.

Pearl Woodward hosted the So and Sew Club on Thursday March 25. Minutes were read and approved, treasurer’s report given, gifts purchased noted, and reminders issued for an April 8 luncheon at Carriage Light Inn and an April 10 Egg Roast in Senior Citizens rooms. Officers elected: Alice Woodward president, Marilyn McDarel vice president, Doris Wilson secretary and treasurer. Lois Mason won the mystery box. each attendee received a small potted plant. refreshments served by several members.

Moravia charity auction aids Lance Ray fund drive

A five year old Moravia boy Lance Ray, son of Mr and Mrs Danny Ray, underwent liver surgery at Blank Memorial Hospital in Des Moines and faces regular treatment. CB radio group organized a white elephant auction at the Campbell Cloud farm home to aid his expenses. The sale netted 802.94 with totals over 1000 collected and more contributions flowing into the Lance Ray fund at the Iowa State Bank in Albia.

Des Moines Man Drowns in Rathbun Lake

A Des Moines man, Robert Parks, 32, of 3800 University, West Des Moines, drowned Saturday while fishing in Rathbun Lake southwest of West Buck Creek boat ramp. Parks fell from a boat along with Marty Ann Burris, 30, who was rescued with a life preserver. Water Patrol recovered Parks’ body about seven hours later. This marks Rathbun’s fourth drowning, following Lonnie Wolver in 1970, Emory Kirkpatrick in 1971, and Wilber Spencer in 1974.

Cub Scout Hobby Show at Grace Methodist Church

Moravia Cub Scout Pack No 40 held a hobby show Sunday March 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Grace Methodist church. Den projects included a puppet show and judged collections. Matt Wilson won first for shells rocks and sands, second tied Rodney Perry rock and coin collection and John Chelsing shells, Ricky Sales astronomy pictures earned third, David Porter honorable mention for rocks and shells, Wolf badges awarded to several scouts.

ISU Proposes Rate Increase by Town Southern Utilities

Iowa Southern Utilities filed with the Iowa State Commerce Commission to raise electric and natural gas rates, seeking about 8.9 million dollars more revenue. Electric class increases average 2.97 dollars monthly for residences and 9.31 dollars for commercial users. gas general service up 1.24 dollars monthly. If approved, new rates would take effect April 30 and appear on June bills for roughly 88,434 electric and 35,948 natural gas customers across a wide Iowa service area. Robert F. Brewer, chairman, cites inflation and debt funding for the need, promising a summer bill adjustment for residential electricity and a combined rate structure while defending current low rates.
