Local items include health notes on Mrs. Frank Allred and a new Dodge touring car bought by W. P. Graydon. Ed Roland visited W. C. Woods in Cartersburg while the Dorcas Society met at the M E church. New wallpaper samples offered by White Star Co.
Members of the AI FE church work to install a pipe organ. The committee reports progress but needs more funds and pledges. Interested donors or scribes may contact committee members J P Calvert Ligg ie Setce Helen Wadler Robert Nelson Rev Carter for subscriptions.
The third quarterly meeting of the M. P. church is set for next Saturday and Sunday at Antioch. The business meeting starts 2 O'clock Saturday. Rev AL W Conn former pastor will preach Thursday to Saturday nights and an all day meeting will be held Sunday. Also noted are visits by Rev W J Crider of Orleans, and plans for Meg Crider to return soon.
The Class of 1916 held commencement at Friends church on May 2 with lavender and yellow decor. Speakers included William Esta Farmer on Pasteur, Henry House on prison reform, and Clifton Furnas on the Putch, with Miss Mary Henderson unable to speak due to illness. Dr. G. T. Lalain distributed diplomas as Thompson's orchestra provided music.
Jesse Turley was appointed to carry the Star mail route from Monrovia to Mooresville with daily trips beginning Monday of the week. He leaves Monrovia between 6 and 7 am and 1 pm daily, earning about 590 dollars a year. Turley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. YD Turley who live east of Peson, described as a safe young man with Paclo Sam's mail.
The high school held an oratorical contest Monday evening with four contestants: Albert Taylor freshman Helena Brown sophomore Miriam Park junior and Everet Park senior. Miriam Park won first place with Albert Taylor close behind as second. Judges were H C Scearce Rev J W J Collins and John C Roberts. The program opened with two numbers by the high school chorus.
The baccalaureate service for the graduating class of 1916 was held at the Friends church Sunday evening. Thompson's Orchestra with Mrs. C. L. Merriman accompanied provided numbers before the address. Rev. Gb. F. Dailey read scripture and Rev. J. W. J. Collins offered opening prayer. Rev. GC. O. Watson delivered the address. The choir sang two sacred songs directed by Miss Bodenhafer and a vocal duet "At Evening Time" by Perry Benham and Jessie Keller.
The high school faculty hosted the senior class in the McCracken parlors on a Saturday evening. Lavender and yellow decorations matched the class colors. Music and games filled the night and a two course luncheon was served by Wes Crawford and helpers.
Mrs. Bings ends her stormy marriage by vowing no man may enter her home. Golduh schemes to defy the rule and guests. humorous misunderstandings follow. See the play at the Library Friday evening May 12 at 8 o clock. Admission ten cents.
The Woman's Club music and art section held its final meeting of the season. Mrs. W A Von Canon narrated Wagner's Johengrin with Mrs. Bertram Jones at the piano and Mrs. Martha Patterson singing. Katherine Ballard discussed Tannhauser and Patterson sang key numbers. Flowers from Mrs. Theodore Romine decorated the room. Out of town guests included Mrs. Will Moore and Mrs. J H Stephenson, along with Mrs. Ralph Jackson and Mrs. Chester Holladay.
All former band members and others with instruments are asked to gather at the town board room on Wednesday evening May 10 to reorganize the band. Band leader Charles Miller of Martinsville will attend.
The White Star Company presents a fine window display this week featuring Hoosier Poet canned goods. The public is invited to view it and call in. Saturday, every purchaser of 50 cents worth of goods or more receives a handsome souvenir.
George W. Loit sells the Plainfield Messenger to B. R. Inman & Son. Mr. Inman is described as an experienced newspaper man.
