A massive explosion and fire at Radbed Mine near Hamm Westphalia traps 302 workers as rescuers fight flames and smoke. Of 380 miners underground, six escape injury, 35 rescued badly, 37 dead. cause remains unclear though initial reports blamed coal dust.
Harvey Watterson son of Henry Watterson editor of the Courier-Journal died after plunging from the nineteenth floor at 35 Wall Street New York City. His body landed on a neighboring roof. death was instantaneous. He was 30, married, and a junior partner in the law firm Wing Russell Watterson.
In Marton Massachusetts Richard Harding Davis begins a street cleaning project using three boys with a push cart and curtain rollers to collect scattered paper. Davis and Mrs Dexter fund the effort with an improvement association backing. Davis hires the youths at eight dollars for a month with Mrs Dexter to pay in the following month.
