The March 4 to 8 seed corn and oat smut campaign outlines meetings across Ware County. A government agent will demonstrate treatments and seed testing methods, urging farmers to attend in their locality. Schedule lists many town venues and times, from March 4 to March 8, with calls to insure crops and promote farm supplies.
Interest ran high as township contests concluded with prizes for seed corn essay quality. Winners in each township advanced to the county contest, where Leslie Paschen of Union Township earned the top prize and a large gold medal sponsored by the Indiana Corn Growers Association for state competition.
Bowman Brothers advertise a one cent Rexall sale weekend event with claims of record sales and value. Sammy Perrigo, son of Mr and Mrs Thornton Perrigo of this city, now in the Philippine Islands with the United States Army hospital unit, sent a report of a recent hose and vaudeville showcase by soldiers. The highlight was a four round draw between Diamond Dick Perrigo and Jimmy Laurie, Perrigo flooring Laurie in the third round but Laurie rallying to pull the bout to a draw at 150 pounds.
The Herald reports Edward J. Pruitt and Leander JD Boyd as Republican nominees for judge of the Carroll County circuit, both Delphi attorneys with long service records. Pruitt, born in Carroll County, has served as city attorney of Delphi and town attorney of Camden and was prosecuting attorney of the circuit. Boyd, senior member of Boyd & Julien, has served as Carroll County attorney and is highly regarded in the courts. White County Republicans name Kassabauni and Carr as local contenders.

William F. Snyder announces in the Herald his candidacy for the Republican nomination to succeed himself as county assessor. From Creek Township he has served two terms and handled inheritance tax valuation duties. He is described as quiet, honest, and well versed in values, with strong official record.

Mrs. Robert Baker died Tuesday night in Logansport after a weeks long pneumonia. Born Deedie Cadewhan in Monticello she later lived in Indianapolis where she married Robert Baker of the Baker Land Co. She leaves two children, her husband, parents, two sisters, and other relatives. funeral in Tiptonville is planned.
In the letters of correspondents the operation is reported as successful. George Clark received Eden Abyss Rise Boone and others from the effects of the operation. Bratzview and Miss Peterson suffered injuries. Whiley is in considerable pain after the horse she was driving bolted and threw her. John Lane was called to Camp Houston for his son Carl who has returned home and shows improving condition. The son’s illness is said to be in a favorable state and recovery is expected.
The National Council of Defense asks merchants in Monticello to adopt early closing hours six oclock for stores and 6 30 for grocers each evening except Wednesdays and Saturdays with hand concerts. Government aims to conserve debt and fuel and support the war. voluntary action preferred over compulsory orders. Officials urge merchants to act now, noting rising farm tool prices and offerings from local dealers and shops like Ada Crowell’s trimmed hats at 241 West Broadway.

The snow drifts that blocked routes since January 22 have melted last week reopening roads. Mail carrier A. B. Wooden and the school hack driver are commended for delivering mail and servicing routes during impassable conditions, driving through fields and ditches for the past month.
Last Tuesday evening the Pythian Sisters held a program at the RKof Py building with music by Wolfe orchestra readings by members and patriotic address by William Seearey. Stereopticon pictures were shown and a cafeteria luncheon served. net proceeds totaled eight dollars donated to the local Red Cross unit.
