White County Names Chairman for Fourth Liberty Loan Drive

Bert Van Voorst, cashier at the State Bank of Monticello, is named chairman of White County’s Fourth Liberty Loan drive set for September 28 to October 19. Robert Wood Reported Wounded Not Missing

Dr A C Williams of Reynolds received a letter from Robert Wood stating he had been wounded and was in Base Hospital No 202. Wood, previously reported missing, suffered two shrapnel wounds and was recovering. His parents are dead and he had given Dr Williams as the person to notify. An official telegram had claimed he was missing in action, but the letter proves this was an error.

Promotion of Everett L. Gardner to Major

Everett L. Gardner informs his parents by telegram that he has been promoted to major. He earned a captain’s commission at Ft. Made Supreme Sacrifice by Monon Soldier in War

Corporal Eugene M. Hughes, 20, of Monon father Smith Hughes and Clara Kirk Hughes, died of wounds in action. Born February 4 1897 in Pierce City Missouri he enlisted May 3 1917 at Monon. He served in Coast Artillery later with the 1st Division Ambulance Train Motor Section in France.

Farmer Brose Dies by Own Hand in Round Grove Township

Charles Brose a prominent Round Grove farmer killed himself with a 22 caliber rifle Monday morning at the Stambaugh home a mile north of Round Grove. He went to Kankakee with two men earlier, had no stated reason for the act but had drank heavily for weeks and attempted suicide twice in the past week. He was married to Laura Criswell of Wolcott with two young daughters surviving. Funeral held Wednesday at 1:30 p m with burial at Montmorenci.

Calls to Local Board Seek Trades Training for Men

Two calls reach the Local Conscription Board asking that three men be sent to Arsenal Technical High School Indianapolis for training as auto mechanics bench wood workers blacksmiths carpenters machinists sheet metal workers telegraphers and wireless operators and that two men be sent to Purdue University Lafayette for training as concrete foremen radio operators and auto mechanics. Men of both the 1917 and 1918 classes may enlist but if not enough volunteers are secured by August 26 the 1917 class will be drafted. Three men will go to Valparaiso next week for mechanical training and three local men Davis Click Wright volunteered to depart August 28. The board has five men left in Class 1 who are alternates and will leave next week. James Hunter John Beagle and Marvin Blythe were selected to fill the county quota for limited service men to Camp Dodge Iowa leaving about August 30.

In a July 28 letter Lieut Clarence D Rotruck says he is in a school at Saurier France similar to Ft Sill and has been there two months. He was commissioned July 12 and assigned to National A Battery C, hopes for mail from home and notes he recently received letters from Horace Heath and Verle Read, the only Monticello men he has met overseas.

Doris Moore twelve daughter of Mr and Mrs John Moore West of the city suffered a severe eye injury last Thursday after running into a barbed wire fence at Harry Wedge’s home. The lid was torn and three stitches were needed. doctors report she is recovering and sight unlikely affected.
