The largest political gathering in Monticello drew two hundred uniformed tanners bearing flaming torches. Hon. W. A. Allison senator elect delivered an eloquent address followed by Hon. John Russell state auditor with praise for loyalty and beauty of the bounty in a vivid procession and speeches.
A mass Republican demonstration in Jones County drew about 1,500 attendees with 80 Anamosa Turners and 60 Wayne Township members in uniform bearing torches. The night featured Glee Club music and a 90 minute speech by Allison noted as clear, direct, and well received.
Anamosa and Wayne hosted a massive Grant and Wilson rally in Jones County. Hon John Russell received loud applause as he spoke briefly on the platform. The crowd sang patriotic songs, cheered for Grant and Wilson, and shared coffee and lunch after the event. The Monticello Grant and Wilson Club thanks local organizers and looks to George C. Wright’s Anamosa address on the 26th.
The speaker extols the 12-year Republican tenure under Grant, lauding abolition of slavery, enfranchisement of the Negro, reduced taxes, strengthened national debt reduction, and economic growth. He defends the party against corruption charges, touts foreign policy gains, and cites improvements in finance, industry, and government administration.
A gathering discusses the Republican split, criticizing party bosses, patronage, and alliances with railroads. Speakers condemn fraud, praise Liberal reformers, defend publishing laws, and defend Grant for the upcoming election amid calls for change and accountability.
