Harvest Home picnic coverage. watch repairs and cement products promoted. marriages and relocations noted. and a wave of local sales and real estate transactions.
The sixteen year old daughter of Mrs L Aldrich died at her mother's home near Monticello after a five day illness. Dubuque mourns Dr Staples with a large funeral. he was a Civil War surgeon under Col W T Shaw. Visits, sermons, and local movers fill the Monticello page including Mrs Fryberger in Great Bend Kansas and Mr George Smith of Missouri. Discussions on shops, dress goods, sermons, and school plans appear throughout the column.
The Jones county fair showcased large premium lists with strong floral hall entries and near one hundred bread entries. Wernimont & Parrott and Gee Stuhler & Sons offered top flour prizes won by Mrs. Dwight Smith and Mrs. Richard Dawson, and Mrs. M. McLaughlin and Mrs. Fred Crane. The fair, well attended, posted Thursday receipts over $1500 and total gate receipts near $2500 despite nearby fairs. Officers King and Dr. W. J. Coughlan steered operations with J. S. Hall handling finances. Italian and Coggon bands provided music. Special premi ums included prizes for lace work, milk cooler, handwriting, and more among numerous exhibitors.
Friday afternoon twenty eight babies and twenty eight mothers drew crowds at the county fair. Judges from Wyom ing Castle Grove and Delaware county selected winners in walking and cutest baby contests. Notable winners included Ernest V. Hubbard and Lonie Finch for walking, Gladys De Witt as prettiest baby born since fall, and Irene Henderson for brightest natured baby. A scholarship was offered for an oration at Lenox College with Forest Matson winning.
