The congressman died at his residence in New York City Tuesday evening after a brief illness. Independent candidate Miss A. B. Witter of Mt. Vernon seeks Linn county county superintendent of schools with Democrats expected to endorse her. The President and cabinet rule out an extra session. no legislative meetings until next congress.
Hank Rickel of Cedar Rapids bolts prohibition positions and shifts to support high license and free trade on Hod Boies ticket for the fall election. He aims to be a secondary figure on the state Democratic slate.
The Anamosa convention on the 20th promises a crowded field. Republicans in the county show little current enthusiasm yet many see a rush of bids once the meeting opens. Named hopefuls include Jas Davidson and J S Stacy for representative, D E Rummell for sheriff, J C Ramsey for auditor, H R Jacobs for treasurer, and Elva Calkins for county superintendent.
In a last session move, F M Rhodes County Treasurer, a Democrat, was authorized by the Republican majority Board to purchase blank books and stationery for all county officials and to receive compensation for his work. Critics note the patronage favors a Democratic official despite a split office.
The Boston born boxer John L. Sullivan declares his candidacy for Congress on the Democratic ticket. He cites party loyalty a strong political record and his work to boost American prestige and patriotism as key reasons for seeking nomination. He vows to campaign if offered the nomination and asserts he will push for broad Democratic support.
The Anamosa Democratic county convention on the 10th nominated G. Eilers for representative and a full county ticket. Delegates were chosen to Sioux City on the 18th, with credentials and organization debates, adjournment, and nominations for sheriff treasurer auditor and coroner.
Jones county Iowa supervisors meet September 2 1889 in Anamosa approving last minutes and bonds. I W Grover bond as soldiers aid commissioner set at 500 dollars. Board to sink a well and buy windmill fixtures for the poor farm. Pat Washington reappointed as relief and aid commissioner. Committee to buy coal for poor farm and offices. Dennis Springer guard bill reconsideration rejected. Reunion of 24th Iowa Volunteers set for Marion September 18–19 with rail fare offers and certificate plan for return tickets.
A list of remaining letters at Monticello Iowa post office published August 26 1889 includes English Delia Gould C Goodenow Eliza Howard George Harris Henry Mallory Hattie Moncrief Isabella Needham W B Smith Logan Smith J E Vanderberg John J Porter Mrs J B by L T Alexander P M. The premium list has crowded out all correspondence and the Board of Supervisors proceedings. Mrs John McConnon is at Sioux City visiting with her daughter Mrs Beyington.
