President Harrison's public letter accepts the nomination and defends administration policy. He argues for protection, reciprocal trade, and a strong national bank, warns against repealing state banks, favors nonpartisan election reforms, and contrasts Republican progress with Democratic demolition. He cites tariffs, ocean shipping, and currency concerns as campaign issues.
Marathon New York September 6 George Willis a Lisle farmer shot his wife fatally and his hired man Oliver seriously during a hayload dispute. Willis then shot the wife in the temple killing her and hanged himself in the woods. The murdered woman was the daughter of J B Howland former town supervisor. Jealousy led to the shooting.
Chicago hosts a monster parade near Lincoln Park with about 20 000 marchers. New York Brooklyn and Philadelphia report thousands more joining lively processions and picnics. Cities from St Louis Des Moines and Milwaukee close offices as unions stage marches and speeches.
A Galicia farmhouse in Seypusch where soldiers were billeted was struck by lightning during a Sunday night storm. The bolt set the building ablaze and killed eight soldiers while injuring seven others.
Senators Sawyer and Hiscock are noted as Indian club swingers. General Wistar, president of the Academy of Natural Sciences, is an avid yachtsman. Governor Flawenr is becoming a skilled boxer, having shed twenty two pounds from 240 to 218. Hon. Andrew D.
