Post Office Seeks Bids for Coal Sale
The Monticello post office will accept sealed bids until 2 p.m. September 6 for about 10 tons of bituminous 3 by 1 4 inch coal. Postmaster Paul Bender announced the sale and said coal and location may be inspected 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday until noon Sept. 6. Bid forms are available at the post office.

Boy's Woodworking Hobby Started With Jig Saw Gift
John J. Goodken and his brothers, sons of the Goedkens, began a woodworking hobby after an electric jig saw gifted by a stranger in Greenland. The 18-year-old led a workshop at 201 North Main street, building a walnut grand prize coffee table and magazine rack for Floral hall at the Great Jones County fair. Major recent work included a motor scooter for the Goedken children. J. J. plans drafting studies via a state rehab program. family relocated from near Manchester to Monticello in June last year.

Stolen Ford Found by Rural Mailman
Mr and Mrs John Hines had their 1946 two door Ford recovered last week after a rural mailman found it in a ditch four miles south of Earlville. The car had front fender damage a broken window displaced seat cushions and glove box contents scattered. Sheriff Dreibelbis noted the thief may have abandoned the car after it ran out of gas and rolled into the ditch. Authorities had not identified the thief by Friday.

About 1,216 students return to Monticello’s two school systems for the 1957 58 year, roughly 50 more than last year. Public enrollment near 880 with Sacred Heart parochial at 336, kindergarten missing from Sacred Heart, and Sacred Heart high school rising to 103. Public day runs 8 45 a m to 4 p m. Sacred Heart half day 8 30 a m to noon.

Cascade reports 725 students across its four schools opening today. St Martin's and St Mary's Catholic high schools total 634 enrollments with 99 in high school and 182 in grades at St Martin's and 105 in high school and 248 elementary at St Mary's. West Side elementary adds 11 grades and 43 kindergarten, East Side serves 14 elementary and 23 kindergarten. Castle Grove Old Church Torn Down For Rest Deischer Farm
The old Castle Grove church built about 1870 by Pennsylvania Dutch Evangelicals was razed last week by Peniel Presbyterian men to raise funds. The 28 by 40 foot structure on Forrest Deischer’s farm served generations with mixed seating and biweekly ministers from White Oak.
