Mary Serecer of Lafayette Indiana, daughter of a prominent businessman, reportedly eloped on the 14th with the family coachman and wed him. Chief Justice Chase’s remains arrived in Cincinnati and were buried at Spring Grove Cemetery after ceremonies.
A sweeping digest notes insurrection in Fresnille Mexico with twenty shot, Bulgaria’s future ruler chosen in Russia, a grain ship foundering near Port Colborne with three lost, and Canada reports multiple murders. Beecher provokes clergy in London, Niagara and English coast storms cause damage, and Austro-Hungarian cholera toll rises. A massive blaze in Eastport Maine on October 16 burned from 2 PM for ten hours destroying sixty two dwellings eight factories seventeen wharves two hotels five boarding houses and one hundred thirty stores offices and businesses rendering one hundred families homeless. Estimated loss reaches 6500000 with factories employing about two thousand people. Immediate aid is urged to prevent further suffering.
At Chicago Stock Yards the 15,000 striking workers voted to return to work with armoured packers retaining the eight-hour day only if other firms do the same. P. D. Armour & Co. agreed to rehire strikers and maintain eight hours for beef packers if rivals match the rule.
The annual report by the Commissioner of Pensions shows 365,783 pensioners at year end including army and navy invalids and widows. Net rolls increased by 20,655 with 43,086 added. average pension value $122 and total annual value $14,708,027. Pensions paid $3,797,831. large shares paid to new pensioners with arrears pending. Beaumont Texas reports a new danger near Sabine as thirsty cattle become aggressive wild animals. A steer chased three men along a bayou edge on Saturday evening, men escaping by reaching a boat. Watering pools are sea water, intensifying the danger.
A deadly shooting on Halsted street during the Stock Yards strike kills Terence Begley and wounds others as Pinkerton guards fire on demonstrators. Arrests follow with 160 guards and 40 non union men detained. investigations and testimonies about who fired persist amid rising tensions.
The Leader, created by the Central Labor Union as Henry George’s voice, published its first issue in New York today. Its staff includes Lewis F. Post, Father McGlynn, Henry George, Prof. DeLeon, Prof. Davidson, David B. Scott, Rev Heber Newton, Charles F. Wingate, and others. Hewitt declines a joint debate with George.
Stevens Point witnesses testified the bunker fired the first shot at Hazeltine. Medical testimony indicated Hazeltine was not in his right mind when the murder occurred. The defense has rested its case.
