Judge Charles F. Andrews of Syracuse was nominated by the Republican State Committee for chief judge of the court of appeals at a New York meeting. The Democratic State Committee also backed the Andrews nomination, while a note on Georgia results cites Gov Northens vote at 135000 to 65000 for Peck. Lyons resident and former congressman John H. Camp dies at his home.
Reports detail a cyclone over Cape Verde destroying homes and plantations and killing cattle while vessels founder. The steamer Bokhara of the Peninsular and Oriental line wrecked on Lund Island near For mosa. She carried many passengers and a large crew. over 150 lives were lost.
The United States Supreme Court affirms the Michigan Supreme Court ruling upholding the Miner law which elects presidential electors by congressional districts and not by the state as a whole. The decision states the fourteenth amendment does not constrain state methods of choosing electors and could shift part of Michigan’s electoral votes to Cleveland.
A bogus order forged by Dispatcher Barker caused a Santa Fe telegraphers strike across the system from Chicago to Galveston. London reports the steamer Bokhara wrecked near Sand Island in the Pescaderes group after a typhoon. About 200 aboard. 160 drowned, including five officers and three sergeants from Hong Kong duty. Twenty survive after brutal seas and heavy waves. Cargo valued in specie and silk. Nearby Agnes reports救 two survivors from the schooner Stranger capsizing October 10.
Three unknown tramps attacked Ephraim Shay a Sussex County milkman around 10 AM in Port Jervis New York and robbed him of 200 dollars. A pursuit by Chief of Police Naples ended with one robber dead and two wounded. the escapees swam the Delaware River to a small island nearby.
New York reports the first steerage immigrants from Europe landed at Ellis Island since the president's proclamation. The Nether lands American steamship Dubbledam brought 890 passengers from Rotterdam after five weeks of observation and baggage disinfection. Most travelers head to destinations outside New York.
