The 1955 leadership discovery program begins October 15 with a $2,100 first prize. High school seniors compete under the theme My Future in Mid-America. Local sponsor is the Mid-America Foundation.
Five winners from Jones county will receive trophies or medals and credentials as Mid America scholars. The first place student will be eligible to participate in the final oral competition at Parsons College Fairfield November 17 18 and 19. Top award is 500 cash and a 1600 four year scholarship with three additional scholarships for runners up. Essays of one thousand words on a topic related to the theme will be judged October 31. The final contest includes an oral essay presentation a written examination and personal interviews.

Six persons correctly identified a 60 acre farm shown in last Monday's Express. The farm near Castle Grove No. 2 school is owned by Mrs. Mary Petersen who lives there with her son Clifford. She has lived on the place nearly 31 years and was born nearby. The Arduser family, with two sons, lives two miles north of Monticello. The Petersens own 160 acres with hay and pasture. dairy cattle hogs and a large sheep flock are raised on the farm.
Frances Ferring of Monticello and Roxann Mussman of Hopkinton received bids from national Panhellenic sororities at Iowa Wesleyan College Mt. Pleasant after rushing week. Zeta Tau Alpha offered Miss Ferring and Alpha Xi Delta selected Miss Mussman.
Don Busick of Belmond with the Marines in Las Vegas and a fellow marine were accosted by a bob cat while patrolling near the camp. Unarmed, they threw rocks and dispatched the 30 pound animal.

Funeral services for Mrs Rosa Steffan Aebi longtime Monticello resident were held Friday at Barta Hesser Funeral home Cedar Rapids. Burial followed at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery Cedar Rapids. Mrs Aebi died Tuesday Oct 4 at her Cedar Rapids home. Born July 4 1872 in Vechigen Switzerland she moved to Monticello in 1906 and married Rudolph Aebi Feb 1 1896 in Bern Switzerland.
After years of carpentry and retirement, Mr and Mrs Aebi moved to Cedar Rapids in 1951. They belonged to the Evangelical and Reformed church of Monticello. Mrs Aebi is survived by 11 children including Mrs Charles Wrinkle in Washington DC and Mrs Hanna Barry in Cedar Rapids, with sons Rudolph Bagdad Lay and Elmer of Chicago among others, plus a nephew, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Clifford Welder of Madrid narrowly escaped fatal injury when a drag-line rig he operated toppled and fell onto him. He was thrown clear and avoided being crushed by inches as the machine collapsed moments after losing balance.
A 49 year old Charles City man Robert Elwood collapsed and died while walking along the Cedar river during a day off fishing. The death occurred near the riverbank with no other injuries reported.
