War Years Took Much From Land in Northwest Iowa Farms
A survey of 105 farms in northwest Iowa finds 68 percent of land in corn oats or soybeans over five years with little hay or pasture. Farmers blame wartime prices and labor shortages for heavy cropping and foresee shifts if corn prices fall, noting soil erosion risks.

Farm Land Prices Then and Now in Iowa's History
A Century Ago Iowa land sales began in 1837 with public surveys in the Black Hawk Purchase and offices in Dubuque and Burlington. By 1846 Iowa City joined as a Federal land office, with 160 acre farms costing about 200 dollars. The piece notes early settlers hoarded savings for clear titles, and some Johnson County families still reside on lands first bought from the government over a hundred years ago.
