Silage May Replace Hay in Dairy Ration

Experiments at Iowa State College show silage can replace hay in dairy rations if the grain mix fed with silage includes adequate protein. The recommended protein levels are 20–21 percent total or 16–18 percent digestible. When corn is scarce, high protein feeds like cottonseed, linseed, or gluten meal can supplement bran or oats. Dr. C. Y. Cannon notes silos preserve nutrients better than shocks and that silage yields 6–12 tons per acre, with superior palatability.

Packers Debate White Giant Chickens in Midwestern States

Reports from H L Wilcke head of Town State college poultry department say some midwestern packers discriminate against the White Giant breed by paying 5 cents less per pound to discourage green shank birds. He notes breeders erred by selecting willow or green shanks. hatcherymen should choose yellow shanked birds. One state already applies this practice as White Giants rise in numbers to meet roasting and capon demand, but discrimination should target only willow shank strains.
