Monticello school board votes on Shannon aid request

Monticello Iowa Monday night debate over hiring an extra full time aide for the Shannon school first and second grade differentiated staffing program ended with a defeated motion. Board President Paul Schneiter voted no while Jack Knopp and Sam Schuetz supported the measure.

Parked cars damaged in city accidents last week

Several city crashes damaged parked vehicles with two drivers charged. Robert L. Stutt, 24, faced charges after a Friday 11:30 p.m. collision on N Farley Street with a 1970 Chevrolet striking an unattended car. Damages totaled about 350 dollars to the Stutt car and 250 to the Adams vehicle.

Fifth Grade Players Share Thanksgiving The Making of Our Country

Fifth grade students at Carpenter school presented a play titled The Making of Our Country last week. The Express captured a holiday cover photo featuring Jane Green Miriam Naig Kathy O'Brien Roxie Wink and Brenda Michaels. Teachers Mrs LeRoy Page and Judy Huntsberger guided the production.

Monticello Scout Troop 66 Sells Christmas Trees

Boy Scout troop 66 in Monticello will sell Christmas trees starting Dec. 1 on the new bank lot west of the depot. Hours are 3 30 to 9 p m weekdays 9 a m to 9 p m Saturdays and noon to 6 p m Sundays. Proceeds support local scout projects.

Mishap kills steer on county road Sunday

Two accidents on Jones county roads over the weekend left no injuries or charges. A 500 lb shorthorn steer owned by Raymond Buel was struck near Langworthy at about 6 50 p m killing the animal. The car driver was John Sander 32 of Dodgeville Wis who swerved to avoid the steer but could not. Damage to his 1970 Chevrolet was about 500 dollars.

Rotary district governor to visit Monticello club

Monticello Rotarians will welcome Ed Zeller cedar Rapids. district governor number 597 on Nov 29 at the evening meeting. Zeller will confer with James Nelson and club officials on service plans and administrative matters. Rotary International has 321 governors and more than 700000 members in 14700 clubs across 149 countries.

Area Band Festival Draws 14 Mon ticello Students

Fourteen Mon ticello Community School students earn spots in the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Honor Band Festival set for Saturday December 4 in Independence. Eight high school players join a 250 member ensemble from 40 schools while six junior high students represent 45 area junior highs. A 7 30 p m concert closes the day in Independence Middle School gym with Dr Tom Slattery and Don Jackson directing the high school and junior high bands respectively. Savage named to five member Highth Judicial Nominating Commission

Dr. Robert E. Savage of Monticello is appointed to the five member Highth Judicial Nominating Commission by Governor Robert D. Ray. The district includes Cedar, Johnson, Jones and Linn counties with terms to January 31, 1972. The commission also names four other members from Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. a Williamsburg man is the fifth member. Savage, 54, a veterinarian and Monticello city council member, serves without pay.

Monticello High holds NHS initiation with ten new members

A National Honor Society ceremony at Monticello High School welcomed twelve new initiates. Speaker Jack Knopp addressed attendees, with principal Stephen Williams and NHS adviser Ray Stumbaugh participating. Listed initiates include Cindy Petersen and Vicky Martin among others. Jo Campbell and Kim Brokaw were absent.
