Legislative Letter and Brookings Report on State Power
The Brookings Institution report lands on lawmakers desks after a three day break, proposing governor led state government and county control over elections and education. It would abolish township governments and shift duties to county boards, with district judges appointing clerks while sheriffs stay elected. The plan seems centuries out of date, and Gov. Herring says it offers a basis for future planning rather than immediate adoption. Democrats smile at Republican missteps as they aim to recover in this special session.
